Giovanni Battista Ricci
Giovanni Battista Ricci (Novara, circa 1537 – Rome, 1627) nicknamed Il Novara after his birth town, was an Italian painter of the late-Mannerist and early- Baroque period, active mainly in Rome. Biography Ricci moved to Rome from his native Piedmont during the papacy of Gregory XIII and was registered with the guild of painters by 1581. He was active in the fresco decoration (1590-1593) of the Scala Sancta in Santa Maria Maggiore, in the decoration (1597-1613) of San Marcello, and (1619) Santa Maria in Traspontina. He was influenced by Federico Zuccari. He also painted in the Vatican Library and the church of Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini. In 1617–1620, Ricci collaborated with Cristoforo Greppi, a painter from Lombardy, in designing and painting the frescoes for the Castellani Chapel in San Francesco a Ripa San Francesco a Ripa is a church in Rome, Italy. San Francesco a Ripa is a church in Rome, Italy. It is dedicated to Francis of Assisi who once stayed at the adjacent convent. The term ''Ripa'' refers to the nearby riverbank of the Tiber. History The origins of this church are related to a Franciscan convent in the Trastevere quarter of Rome, which in 1231 annexed a church dedicated to Saint Blaise (San Biagio). This church was decorated with the ''St Francis'' cycle by Pietro Cavallini, now lost. This cycle probably served as the prototype for the famous ''Legend of St. Francis'' frescoes ascribed to Giotto di Bondone in the Upper Basilica of St Francis in Assisi. The construction of the present church was begun in 1603 by Onorio Longhi, starting with the apse. The facade was finished in 1681-1701 with designs by Mattia de Rossi. Borgo (sometimes called also I Borghi) is the 14th ''Rioni of Rome, rione'' of Rome, Italy. It is identified by the initials R. XIV and is included within Municipio I. Its coat of arms shows a lion (after the name "Leonine City", which was also given to the district), lying in front of three mounts and a star. San Giacomo Scossacavalli
San Giacomo Scossacavalli (''San Giacomo a Scossacavalli'') was a church in Rome important for historical and artistic reasons. The church, facing the Piazza Scossacavalli, was built during the early Middle Ages and since the early 16th century hosted a confraternity which commissioned Renaissance architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger to build a new shrine. This was richly decorated with frescoes, painted (among others) by mannerist artist Giovanni Battista Ricci and his students. The church was demolished in 1937, when Via della Conciliazione (the avenue leading to St. Peter's Basilica) was built and the piazza and central part of the Borgo rione were demolished. Many decorative elements still exist, since they were preserved from demolition. Cristoforo Greppi (Active early 17th century) was an Italian painter of the Mannerist period, active in Rome. He was born in Como, Region of Lombardy, in Italy. He worked circa 1600 with Prospero Orsi and Francesco Nappi under the guidance of Cristoforo Roncalli in the decoration of the Palazzo Mattei, Rome. Greppi painted the fresco of ''Joseph's brothers in Egypt''. In 1605–1608, he worked with the same team in decoration for Vatican palaces.
