Giorgio Ricci
Giorgio Ricci (b. 1870 in Verica) was an Italian entrepreneur known for bringing Italian immigrants to Araucanía in Chile under fraudulent conditions. Araucanía had been recently incorporated to Chile (1861-1883) when Ricci in 1904 brought to Chile a group of Italian immigrants from Emilia-Romagna, promising good lands for agriculture. Once in Chile immigrants were disappointed by the fact the lands he granted them were hilly forest not suitable for agriculture. The colony was initially called Nueva Italia but changed in 1907 name to Capitán Pastene. The Occupation of Araucanía or Pacification of Araucanía (1861–1883) was a series of military campaigns, agreements and penetrations by the Chilean army and settlers into Mapuche territory which led to the incorporation of Araucanía into Chilean national territory. ''Pacification of Araucanía'' was the expression used by the Chilean authorities for this process. The conflict was concurrent with Argentine campaigns against the Mapuche (1878–1885) and Chile's wars with Spain (1865–1866) and with Peru and Bolivia (1879–1883). Capitán Pastene
Capitán Pastene is a town founded by Italian immigrants, located in the commune of Lumaco in the Araucanía Region of Chile. History Capitán Pastene was initially founded with the name "Nueva Italia" in 1906. The first settlers were Italians brought by Giorgio Ricci, he had promised land suitable for agriculture, but settlers found themselves immersed in a zone of forested hills. In 1907 the settlement changed name to Capitán Pastene. Several houses recall the days of the earliest settlers of the 87 families, with nearly 770 members, who arrived in 1904 and 1905 from Modena in two successive migrations to focus initially on agriculture and forestry work. Soon a number of settlers moved out to the nearby towns of Traiguén and Temuco or farther away to Santiago or Argentina. Temuco
Temuco () is a city and commune, capital of the Cautín Province and of the Araucanía Region in southern Chile. The city is located south of Santiago. The city grew out from a fort of the same name established in 1881 during Chile's invasion of Araucanía. Temuco lies in the middle of the historic Araucanía, a traditional land of the indigenous Mapuche. Traiguén () is a Chilean city and commune in the Malleco Province, Araucanía Region. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Traiguén spans an area of and has 19,534 inhabitants (9,734 men and 9,800 women).
