Giorgio Quazza Medal
The Giorgio Quazza Medal is an award given by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) to a distinguished control engineer, presented at each IFAC Triennial International World Congress. It was established in 1979, as a memorial to the late Giorgio Quazza, a leading Italian electrical and control engineer who served IFAC in many capacities in a most distinguished manner. International Federation Of Automatic Control
The International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), founded in September 1957, is a multinational federation of 49 national member organizations (NMO), each one representing the engineering and scientific societies concerned with automatic control in its own country. The aim of the Federation is to promote the science and technology of control in the broadest sense in all systems, whether, for example, engineering, physical, biological, social or economic, in both theory and application. IFAC is also concerned with the impact of control technology on society. IFAC pursues its purpose by organizing technical meetings, by publications, and by any other means consistent with its constitution and which will enhance the interchange and circulation of information on automatic control activities. David Mayne
David Quinn Mayne, FRS, FIEEE, FREng (born 23 April 1930) is a British academic, engineer, teacher and author. Career Mayne began his career in 1950 as a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand (1950–54; 1957–59). He lectured at Imperial College London from 1959-67 and also received his PhD in 1967 at the University of London under John Westcott. He was a Research Fellow at Harvard (1971). At Imperial College he was professor of control theory (1971–91) as well as concurrently heading the Department of Electrical Engineering (1984–88). He was a professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Davis from 1989-96. From 1996 he has been a professor emeritus. IEEE Control Systems Award
The IEEE Control Systems Award is a technical field award given to an individual by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) "for outstanding contributions to control systems engineering, science or technology". It is an IEEE-level award, created in 1980 by the board of directors of the IEEE, but sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society. Walter Murray Wonham
Walter Murray Wonham (1934–2023) is a Canadian control theorist and professor at the University of Toronto. He dealt with multi-variable geometric control theory, stochastic control and stochastic filters, and more recently the control of discrete event systems from the standpoint of mathematical logic and formal languages. Education Wonham attended a boys’ school and preferred individual to team sports, taking up sailing and tennis. Wonham obtained his bachelor's degree in engineering physics from McGill University in 1956, and then a doctorate in stochastic control from the University of Cambridge in 1961. Roger Ware Brockett (born October 22, 1938 in Seville, Ohio) is an American control theorist and the An Wang Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, who founded thHarvard Robotics Laboratoryin 1983. Brockett became a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1991 for outstanding contributions to the theory and practice of linear and nonlinear control systems. John Flavell Coales
John Flavell Coales CBE, FRS (14 September 1907 – 6 June 1999) was a British physicist and engineer. He started the Borehamwood laboratory of the Elliott Brothers company in 1946. Coales graduated in 1929 from Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge and joined the British Admiralty, working in the experimental department of the Signal School, Portsmouth. He later worked on radio direction finding and centimeter-band radar used for naval gunnery. In 1946 he was awarded the OBE for his wartime work on naval radar. That year he left the Admiralty and became director of the Elliot Brothers research laboratory. Coales made significant contributions to automatic process control, and was a pioneer in the use of digital computers for real-time control.
