Gingko Library
Gingko is a UK-based charitable foundation created in 2014 to promote dialogue and understanding with the Middle East, West Asia and North Africa through conferences, publications, events and cultural programmes. It should not be confused with Gingko Press, which is a publisher originally based in Germany. Gingko was established in memory of Werner Mark Linz, the late publisher of the American University in Cairo Press. Dr Barbara Schwepcke, Chief Executive and founder of Gingko, explained that Linz '… always thought big. So it is not surprising that his last plan was a 10-year project of dialogues to preserve and promote the genius of Arab Civilization.'. The inaugural Gingko conference was held at SOAS in December 2014. There have since been conferences at the British Academy in London, in Berlin at the Barenboim–Said Academy, and in 2017 at the London School of Economics. Charity (practice)
The practice of charity is the voluntary giving of help to those in need, as a humanitarian act, unmotivated by self-interest. There are a number of philosophies about charity, often associated with religion. Etymology The word ''charity'' originated in late Old English to mean a "Christian love of one's fellows", and up until at least the beginning of the 20th century, this meaning remained synonymous with charity. Aside from this original meaning, ''charity'' is etymologically linked to Christianity, with the word originally entering into the English language through the Old French word ''charité'', which was derived from the Latin ''caritas'', a word commonly used in the Vulgate New Testament to translate the Greek word ''agape'' (), a distinct form of love (see the article: Charity (virtue)). Werner Mark Linz
Werner Mark Linz (6 April 1935 – 9 February 2013) was a German-American publisher who specialised in educational and international publishing in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. He was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1935. He studied humanities at the University of Frankfurt and continued his education in the United States. In 1960 he moved permanently to New York and became a naturalised United States citizen. Linz held senior executive position in New York with Herder & Herder, McGraw-Hill, and the Seabury Press in the 1960s and 1970s, before establishing the Continuum and Crossroad Publishing Company, Crossroad publishing companies, and serving as the Continuum Group's president and publisher in New York from 1979 to 1999. British Academy
The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established in 1902 and received its royal charter in the same year. It is now a fellowship of more than 1,000 leading scholars spanning all disciplines across the humanities and social sciences and a funding body for research projects across the United Kingdom. The academy is a self-governing and independent registered charity, based at 10–11 Carlton House Terrace in London. Eric Ormsby
Eric Linn Ormsby (born 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia) is deputy head of academic research and publications at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. He was formerly a professor at McGill University Institute of Islamic Studies, where he also served as director. He has published widely on Islamic thought, including ''Theodicy in Islamic Thought'' (1984). Ormsby has had six collections of poetry published, including ''Bavarian Shrine and Other Poems'' (1990), which won a Quebec prize for the best poetry of that year. Bahia Shehab ( ar, بهية شهاب; born 1977) is a multidisciplinary artist, designer, historian, creative director, educator and activist based in Cairo, Egypt. Her work is concerned with identity and cultural heritage, and uses Islamic art history and in particular Islamic calligraphy and graphic design to explore contemporary Arab politics, feminist discourse and social issues. Her culturally oriented work is concerned with using history as a means to better understand the present, and to find solutions for the future. Shehab is interested in the ways in which art can be employed for social change, and has explored this phenomenon through her artwork, which draws upon such socially charged themes as Arab identity and women's rights.
