Gimnasia Y Esgrima (basketball)
The Gimnasia y Esgrima basketball section is part of the Argentine sports club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. The professional senior team currently competes in La Liga Argentina de Básquet (former "Torneo Nacional de Ascenso"), the second division of Argentine basketball league system. Gimnasia y Esgrima plays its home venues at Polideportivo Víctor Nethol, a multi-purpose stadium with capacity of 3,000. History Basketball was practiced for the first time at the club in the 1920s. In 1924 the institution built a stadium on the corner of 60 and 118 streets. Since that time, it would become one of the major sports in the club. In December 1970, Gimnasia y Esgrima went to a tour on Europe. The team participated in the "Torneo de Navidad" (Christmas Tournament) organised by Spanish club Real Madrid. The La Liga Argentina de Básquet (abbreviated "LLA", and literally in English "The Argentine Basketball League"), previously known as the Torneo Nacional de Ascenso (abbreviated "TNA", and literally in English "National Promotion Tournament") is the second division of the Argentine basketball league system. The La Liga's predecessor is the Torneo Federal de Básquetbol, which became the third division when the LLA was created in 1992. Competition format La Liga Argentina consists of 28 teams, which are divided into four Divisions: North Center North, South, and Center South, with 7 teams per zone. The competition format is similar to that of Liga A, with a regular season divided into two stages. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. The Campeonato Argentino de Clubes de Básquet (English language, English: Argentine Championship of Basketball Clubs) was the top-tier level division professional basketball championship in Argentina, until 1984, when it was replaced by the Liga Nacional de Básquet (LNB). Alberto Pedro "Beto" Cabrera (also nicknamed ''Mago'' or ''Mandrake'' because of his playing skills) (December 16, 1945 – August 12, 2000) was an Argentine basketball player. Juan José Muñoz (3 June 1950 – 8 May 2013) was an Argentine businessman. He was an advisor to the current Minister of Interior, Mr. Aníbal Fernández, during the period when the latter was a federal senator. Boubacar Richard Aw (born June 22, 1975) is a Senegalese former professional basketball player. After growing up in Thiès, Aw moved to the United States in 1993 and he played high school basketball in Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina; he then went on to play 4 years in college at Georgetown.
