''Gilsoddeum'' is a 1986 South Korean drama film directed by Im Kwon-taek. Plot In 1983 KBS launched a campaign to reunite families torn apart in the Korean War three decades earlier. In an expert dissection of the social and familial rifts in modern Korea, director Im Kwon-taek integrates footage from the campaign into the story of Hwa-yeong, who leaves her middle-class life in Busan to search for the son she lost in Gilsotteum during the war. Im Kwon-taek
Im Kwon-taek (born December 8, 1934) is one of South Korea's most renowned film directors. In an active and prolific career, his films have won many domestic and international film festival awards as well as considerable box-office success, and helped bring international attention to the Korean film industry. As of spring 2015, he has directed 102 films. Early life Im Kwon-taek was born in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do and grew up in Gwangju. After the Korean War, he moved to Busan in search of work. He then moved to Seoul in 1956, where Jeong Chang-hwa, director of '' Five Fingers of Death'' (1972), offered him room and board for work as a production assistant. Jeong recommended him for directing in 1961. Career Im's directorial premiere was with the 1962 film, ''Farewell to the Duman River'' (''Dumanganga jal itgeola''). 36th Berlin International Film Festival
The 36th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held 14–25 February 1986. The festival opened with '' Ginger and Fred'' by Federico Fellini, which played out of competition at the festival. The Golden Bear was awarded to West German film '' Stammheim'' directed by Reinhard Hauff. The retrospective was in honour of German actress and film producer Henny Porten and the homage was dedicated to American film director Fred Zinnemann. Claude Lanzmann's 9 hour long documentary film '' Shoah'' about The Holocaust was screened at the ''Young Filmmakers Forum'' (renamed the ''International Forum of New Cinema'' in 1987).
