Gillian Wratt
Gillian Shirley Wratt (born 1954) is a New Zealand botanist and science administrator. She was the first woman director of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme, New Zealand Antarctic Programme (1992–1996) and made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Antarctica. Early life and education Wratt was born in Motueka and attended Motueka High School. She gained a B.Sc. degree with honours in Botany (1972–1975) from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. She joined the Plant Physiology Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (New Zealand), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in Palmerston North in 1977 and in 1979 was transferred to Wellington, where she worked for the Natural Research Advisory Council as the secretary to the Primary Production Committee which was concerned with research programmes and their funding. New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme
The New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme (NZARP) was a research program that operated a permanent research facility in Antarctica from 1959 to 1996. It was created by the Geophysics Division of New Zealand's Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (New Zealand), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), originally based in Wellington. The programme promoted research in geochemistry, zoology, geology, botany, meteorology, and limnology. History NZARP began as a proposal by the New Zealand government, in 1953, for a research base in Antarctica. Its mission was to provide support for a variety of scientific fieldwork in Antarctica. Member Of The New Zealand Order Of Merit
The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. In the order of precedence, the New Zealand Order of Merit ranks immediately after the Order of New Zealand.
