Gilliam County, Oregon
Gilliam County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,995, making it the third-least populous county in Oregon. The county seat is Condon. The county was established in 1885 and is named for Cornelius Gilliam, a colonel who commanded the forces of the provisional government of Oregon after the Whitman Massacre. History The Oregon Legislative Assembly created Gilliam County on February 25, 1885, from the eastern third of Wasco County after residents complained that they were too far from their county seat in The Dalles. The first Gilliam county seat was at Alkali, now Arlington. The question of a permanent county seat was placed on general election ballots in 1886, 1888, and again in 1890, when voters chose to move the county seat to Condon, known to early settlers as "Summit Springs." Gilliam is a village in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 164 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. History On May 13, 1908, a tornado struck the community around dinnertime, killing 34 people and devastating the town, leaving only two homes standing. Fifteen others were killed in nearby communities. Geography Gilliam is located in northeastern Caddo Parish at (32.827585, -93.844388). U.S. Route 71 passes through the west side of the village, leading south to Belcher and to Shreveport. To the north, US 71 leads to Hosston and to the Arkansas border. According to the United States Census Bureau, Gilliam has a total area of , all land. USS ''Gilliam'' (APA-57), named for Gilliam County in Oregon, was the lead ship in her class of attack transports serving in the United States Navy during World War II. She was launched 28 March 1944 under a Maritime Commission contract by the Consolidated Steel Corporation, Wilmington, Los Angeles; sponsored by Mrs. A. O. Williams of Wilmington; acquired 31 July 1944; and commissioned 1 August 1944. Operational history World War II The first of a new type of attack transport, ''Gilliam'' stood out of San Francisco Bay 16 October 1944 with 750 United States Army troops for Oro Bay, New Guinea, and delivered them to that port 4 November.
