Gillespie is a city in Macoupin County, Illinois, United States and part of the Metro East region of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 3,168 at the 2020 census. Gillespie provides police protection for Benld, Mt Clare, and Eagerville. In addition Gillespie also supplies water to Benld, Sawyerville, Wilsonville, Mt Clare, Dorchester, East Gillespie, and Eagerville, as well as sewer services to East Gillespie and Eagerville. History The first group of settlers arrived to what is now present-day Gillespie in the late 1820s from Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. The township thrived in the 1830s, increasing in population and businesses. In 1835 the first schoolhouse was built. Gillespie was officially incorporated as a town in the spring of 1853. By 1904, the population rose to 3,100 and there were a number of businesses, churches, and schools. Raphael “Ralph” Tracy (February 6, 1904 – March 6, 1975) was an American soccer player. Tracy spent his club career with several teams in St. Louis, Missouri. He also played in all three U.S. games at the 1930 FIFA World Cup. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Harold Clifford Keel (April 13, 1919November 7, 2004), known professionally as Howard Keel, was an American actor and singer, known for his rich bass-baritone singing voice.
