Gilles Pécout (born 2 December 1961) is a French historian, academic and diplomat. He is currently the French Ambassador to Austria. Biography Pécout was born in Marseille. He graduated from the École normale supérieure in Paris, where he was also professor and director of the Department of History. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state (including the Pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church or the country, especially in a military capacity. The Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( it, Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana) is the senior Italian order of merit. It was established in 1951 by the second President of the Italian Republic, Luigi Einaudi. The ''Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'' (Order of Arts and Letters) is an order of France established on 2 May 1957 by the Minister of Culture. Its supplementary status to the was confirmed by President Charles de Gaulle in 1963.
