Gili Gili
Gili Gili is a village in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. The village is located between Swinger Bay-Alotau to the east and Ladava to the west in Milne Bay north shore. Gili Gili Dock Gili Gili Dock was naval loading and unloading dock, with both a jetty and pontoon wharf at Gili Gili (also spelled Gill Gill). Both the Australian Armed Forces ( HMAS Ladava) and United States Navy (Naval Base Milne Bay) used the dock. On September 6, 1942, the MV ''Anshun'' was sunk at Gili Gili Dock by the Japanese cruiser ''Tenryū''. She was refloated and repaired. Gili Gili Base was at , just west of Swinger Bay and the Swinger Bay Base. Turnbull Field No. 3 Strip, was inland from the Gili Gili Dock and Swinger Bay Base amphibious training center just to the east of Gili Gili Dock. Australian Defence Force
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the military organisation responsible for the defence of the Commonwealth of Australia and its national interests. US Naval Advance Bases
US Naval Advance Bases were built globally by the United States Navy during World War 2, World War II to support and project U.S. naval operations world-wide. A few were built on Allies of World War II, allied soil, but most were captured enemy facilities or completely new. Advance bases provided the fleet with support to keep ships tactically available with repair and supply depots of facilities, rather than return them to CONUS, continental United States. Before Japan declared war on the United States the US Navy had a single fleet sized advanced base in the Territory of Hawaii. It was Naval Station Pearl Harbor. During the war the US Navy Seabees built over 400 advance bases categorized by size. Naval bases were either Lions or Cubs while airfields were either Oaks or Acorns. Espiritu Santo Naval Base
Naval Advance Base Espiritu Santo or Naval Base Espiritu Santo, most often just called ''Espiritu Santo'', was a major advance Naval base that the U.S. Navy Seabees built during World War II to support the Allied effort in the Pacific. The base was located on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, now Vanuatu, in the South Pacific. The base also supported the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, and US Marine Corps. It was the first large advance base built in the Pacific. By the end of the war it had become the second-largest base in the theater. To keep ships tactically available there was a demand for bases that could repair and resupply the fleet at advance locations, rather than return them to the United States. Turnbull Field
Turnbull Field was an aerodrome near Gili Gili, Papua New Guinea. History Built by the US Army 2nd Battalion of 43rd Engineer General Service Regiment (less Company E), during the Battle of Milne Bay during World War II with assistance from the 105th Naval Construction Battalion. Originally known as ''No. 3 Strip'', the airfield was renamed ''Turnbull Field'' on 14 September 1942 in honour of Royal Australian Air Force Squadron Leader Peter Turnbull, who was killed in an aircraft crash. The single runway was long x wide surfaced with marston matting. Taxiways and revetments extended off both sides of the runway. The aerodrome was abandoned in February 1944 and has been disused since the end of World War II. MV Anshun (1930)
The MV ''Anshun'' was a motor vessel built by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Limited, Greenock in 1930 for The China Navigation Company for the Chinese coastal passenger service. Wartime service With the outbreak of World War II, the ''Anshun'' was requisitioned by the Admiralty as a stores ship at Freetown, returned to her owners in 1940. The ship was damaged by a bomb on 10 December 1941 at Manila, Philippines. Naval Base Milne Bay
Naval Base Milne Bay, also called Naval Advance Base Milne Bay, was new major United States Navy sea and airbase base built on Milne Bay in Milne Bay Province in south-eastern Papua New Guinea. By spring 1943, the build up of the US Navy to support the Pacific War had caused overcrowding at the ports on the east coast of Australia. To help the Seabee departed Naval Base Brisbane on June 19, 1943 to set up a new base in Milne Bay. Naval Base Milne Bay headquarters was at Ladava Navy Base. The Royal Australian Navy already had a small base in Milne Bay: HMAS Ladava. Australians were able to defend and keep Milne Bay in the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942. HMAS ''Ladava'' is a former Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base that was located at Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea. The Australian armed forces operated a number of bases in Milne Bay during World War II. Australians were able to defend and keep Milne Bay in the Battle of Milne Bay in 1942.
