Giles De Coninck
Giles de Coninck (Aegidius; also called Regius) (b. 20 December 1571, at Bailleul in French Flanders; d. 31 May 1633, at Leuven) was a Flemish Jesuit theologian. Alphonsus Liguori considered Coninck a moral theologian of distinction, though John de Lugo impugned his views on many questions. Life At the age of 21 he entered the Society of Jesus. During his course of studies at the Catholic University of Leuven he had Lessius among his professors. He became the successor of his teacher in the chair of scholastic theology, which he held for eighteen years. Bailleul (; ''Belle'' in Dutch) is a commune in the Nord department in northern France. It is located in French Flanders, from the Belgian border and northwest of Lille. Flemish (''Vlaams'') is a Low Franconian dialect cluster of the Dutch language. It is sometimes referred to as Flemish Dutch (), Belgian Dutch ( ), or Southern Dutch (). Carlos Sommervogel (8 January 1834 Р4 March 1902) was a French Jesuit scholar. He was author of the monumental ''Biblioth̬que de la Compagnie de J̩sus'', which served as one of the major references for the editors of the Catholic Encyclopedia. Life Born in Strasbourg, Sommervogel, was the fourth son of Marie-Maximillian-Joseph Sommervogel and Hortense Blanchard. After studying at the lyc̩e of Strasbourg, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Issenheim, Alsace, 2 February 1853, and was sent later to the College of Saint-Acheul, Amiens, to complete his literary studies. In 1856, he was appointed assistant prefect of discipline and sub-librarian in the College of the Immaculate Conception, Rue Vaugirard, Paris. Here he discovered his literary vocation. The von Hurter family belonged to the Swiss nobility; in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries three of them were known for their conversions to Roman Catholicism, their ecclesiastical careers in Austria and their theological writings. Lessius
Leonardus Lessius ( nl, Lenaert Leys; 1 October 1554, in Brecht – 15 January 1623, in Leuven) was a Flemish moral theologian from the Jesuit order. Life At the age of thirteen the young Leonard won the Brecht scholarship to the University of Leuven. This university is the main place he will be identified with for the next fifty years. In 1567 he matriculated in an arts department called Le Porc (Porcus alit doctos), during the final oral exam he was merited the title of primus. He joined the Jesuits in 1572, and after theological studies in Rome under Francisco Suarez and Robert Bellarmine, he became professor of theology at the University of Leuven. In his early teaching years, he was involved in the predestination theological debate that was raging in Leuven in 1587–88 (against Baianism). The Old University of Leuven (or of Louvain) is the name historians give to the university, or ''studium generale'', founded in Leuven, Brabant (then part of the Burgundian Netherlands, now part of Belgium), in 1425.
