Giles E. Strangways
Giles Edward Strangways (1819 – 24 February 1906) was a pioneer of the British colony of South Australia, an associate of John Finnis and Charles Sturt. He was a brother of Thomas Bewes Strangways and an uncle of H. B. T. Strangways, a Premier of South Australia. Giles Strangways was born in Shapwick, Somerset, England, the fourth son of Henry Bull Strangways (died 1829), Colonel-Commandant of the Polden Hills Militia. Giles Strangways was among the earliest purchasers of South Australia land, and emigrated on , along with his brother T. Bewes Strangways, with Captain John Hindmarsh in the First Fleet of South Australia, and was present at the proclamation of the province in 1836. In 1838 he accompanied Charles Sturt and John Finnis on their overland cattle drive from Sydney to Adelaide, following the River Murray. River Murray
The Murray River (in South Australia: River Murray) (Ngarrindjeri: ''Millewa'', Yorta Yorta: ''Tongala'') is a river in Southeastern Australia. It is Australia's longest river at extent. Its tributaries include five of the next six longest rivers of Australia (the Murrumbidgee, Darling, Lachlan, Warrego and Paroo Rivers). Together with that of the Murray, the catchments of these rivers form the Murray–Darling basin, which covers about one-seventh the area of Australia. It is widely considered Australia's most important irrigated region. Settlers Of South Australia
A settler is a person who has migrated to an area and established a permanent residence there, often to colonize the area. A settler who migrates to an area previously uninhabited or sparsely inhabited may be described as a pioneer. Settlers are generally from a sedentary culture, as opposed to nomadic peoples who may move settlements seasonally, within traditional territories. Settlement sometimes relies on dispossession of already established populations within the contested area, and can be a very violent process. Sometimes settlers are backed by governments or large countries. Settlements can prevent native people from continuing their work. Clarry Neate
John Clarence Neate (28 June 1904 – 1972), generally known as Clarrie or Clarry Neate, was a South Australian racehorse trainer and cartoonist, known for caricatures of sporting identities in '' The Sport'' weekly newspaper. History Neate was born in Caltowie, South Australia the son of John Thomas Neate (1878–1960) and Mignonette May Synnett, who married in 1903 He was a capable jockey, especially over hurdles, and trained several horses for Ted Baker (c. 1873 – 12 July 1936), and Fred Jennings (c. 1882 – 18 November 1948) Jennings was owner and editor of '' The Sport'', which published many of Neate's drawings. He also painted in oils and watercolors. At least one example, of a downed Japanese bomber, survives. He had stables in Kent Town until 1934, then transferred to Gawler. Henry Bull Templar Strangways (14 November 1832 – 10 February 1920) was an Australian politician and Premier of South Australia. Strangways was the eldest son of Henry Bull Strangways of Shapwick, Somerset, England. As a boy, he visited South Australia, where his uncle Thomas Bewes Strangways was a pioneer. Returning to England he entered the Middle Temple in November 1851 and was called to the bar in June 1856.
