Gilead J. Wilmot
Gilead J. Wilmot (April 21, 1834 – ?) was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. He attended Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary in Gouverneur, New York. During the American Civil War, he was a captain with the 34th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. Wisconsin State Senate
The Wisconsin Senate is the upper house of the Wisconsin State Legislature. Together with the larger Wisconsin State Assembly they constitute the legislative branch of the state of Wisconsin. The powers of the Wisconsin Senate are modeled after those of the U.S. Senate. The Wisconsin Constitution ties the size of the State Senate to that of the Assembly, by limiting its size to no less than 1/4, nor more than 1/3, of the size of the Assembly. Currently, Wisconsin is divided into 33 Senate Districts (1/3 of the current Assembly membership of 99) apportioned throughout the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 33 senators. Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary
Gouverneur Wesleyan Seminary was located in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The seminary was operated in the 19th century by the Black River Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. History The seminary began in 1827 as a grammar school called Gouverneur Union Academy. On April 5, 1828, this academy was incorporated as The Gouverneur High School. By April 1834, a two story brick school was built and reopened with Mr. Joseph Hopkins as principal. In March, 1836, the management of the school was transferred to the Black River Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Rev. Jesse Truesdell Peck, D.D. was appointed as principal. 34th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 34th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a conscripted infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 34th Wisconsin Infantry was composed of men drafted by state authorities under General Order No. 94. The regiment was organized at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service December 31, 1862. The regiment was mustered out on September 8, 1863, in the course of disciplinary action against various members of the regiment, including the regiment commander, Fritz Anneke. Anneke, a famous Forty-Eighter of German origin, had been a former Prussian officer and artillery commander during the 1849 revolutionary war in Palatinate and Baden, Germany.
