Gilbert Foan
Gilbert Arthur Foan (1887 – 21 February 1935) was a British hairdresser and socialist politician. He wrote several influential books on hair and make-up. Born in Yeovil to a Quaker family, Foan received an elementary education before becoming an agricultural labourer. By 1911, he was living in Saffron Walden, where he became the secretary of the local branch of the Independent Labour Party (ILP). He was also active in the National Agricultural Labourers' and Rural Workers' Union, and was a leading figure in its East Anglian strike, from 1912 until 1914. He married Edith in 1914, and the couple relocated to Croydon, where Foan opened a tobacconists' shop, where he also worked as a hairdresser. During World War I, he was a conscientious objector, and was sentenced to hard labour at Wormwood Scrubs. In April 1919, he was released due to his poor health. Croydon is a large town in south London, England, south of Charing Cross. Part of the London Borough of Croydon, a local government district of Greater London. It is one of the largest commercial districts in Greater London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy. The entire town had a population of 192,064 as of 2011, whilst the wider borough had a population of 384,837. Historically an ancient parish in the Wallington hundred of Surrey, at the time of the Norman conquest of England Croydon had a church, a mill, and around 365 inhabitants, as recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The South Suburban Co-operative Society (SSCS) was a Consumers' co-operative, co-operative retailer in south London, Surrey and Kent, England. It became part of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, now the Co-operative Group. The SSCS came into existence in 1918 with the amalgamation of the Croydon Co-operative Society, Croydon (formed 1887), Bromley (company), Bromley and Crays (formed 1882 and 1870) and Penge (company), Penge and Beckenham (company), Beckenham (formed 1879) Societies. In 1930, SSCS merged with the Reigate Industrial and Provident Society, followed by the Tonbridge Industrial Society in 1938.
