Gikongoro
Gikongoro is a city in Nyamagabe district, Southern Province, Rwanda. It was previously part of Gikongoro Province, which has been disestablished. Gikongoro province was founded by the newly independent Rwandan state shortly after it gained freedom from Belgium in 1962. It was designed to undermine control of the Tutsi who had a stronghold in nearby Nyanza. Before the genocide in 1993, Gikongo city had a population of under 10,000. Human Rights Watch has described Gikongoro town and province at the time of the genocide as "largely incoherent." Local political leader Emmanuel Gapyisi was assassinated in 1993 and minister and PSD head Frederic Nzamurambaho was killed at the start of the genocide. Once the genocide began, the Tutsi population of Gikongoro was wiped out quickly compared to other towns. The city has been growing in recent years, with a number of modern buildings constructed. Southern Province, Rwanda
Southern Province ( rw, Intara y'Amajyepfo; french: Province du Sud; nl, Zuidelijke Provincie) is one of Rwanda's five provinces. Nyamagabe
Nyamagabe is a district (''akarere'') in Southern Province, Rwanda. Its capital is Gasaka. Geography, flora and fauna The district lies between Butare and Cyangugu in the south-west of Rwanda, and contains much of the former Gikongoro Province, which was disbanded in 2006. It also contains the eastern half of Nyungwe Forest, a popular tourist destination, being one of the last remaining forest areas of Rwanda and home to chimpanzees and many other species of primate. Tutsi
The Tutsi (), or Abatutsi (), are an ethnic group of the African Great Lakes region. They are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group and the second largest of three main ethnic groups in Rwanda and Burundi (the other two being the largest Bantu ethnic group Hutu and the Pygmy group of the Twa). Historically, the Tutsi were pastoralists and filled the ranks of the warriors' caste. Before 1962, they regulated and controlled Rwandan society, which was composed of Tutsi aristocracy and Hutu commoners, utilizing a clientship structure. Nyanza District
Nyanza is a district (''akarere'') in Southern Province, Republic of Rwanda. Its capital is Nyanza town, which is also the provincial capital. ''Nyanza'' is a Bantu word meaning ''lake'', which probably refers to the small body of water created by a dam to the west of Nyanza town and sometimes referred to by the local residents as “Ikiyaga” or lake. which probably refers to a large lake to the west of Nyanza city. Nyungwe Forest
The Nyungwe Forest () is located in southwestern Rwanda, on the border with Burundi, where it is contiguous with the Kibira National Park to the south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The Nyungwe rainforest is probably the best preserved montane rainforest in Africa. It is located in the watershed between the basin of the river Congo to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. From the east side of the Nyungwe forest comes also one of the branches of the Nile sources. Nyungwe National Park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The nearest town is Cyangugu, to the west.
