Gifford, Iowa
Gifford is an unincorporated community in southeastern Hardin County, Iowa, United States. It lies along local roads south of the city of Eldora, the county seat of Hardin County. Its elevation is 945 feet (288 m). History Gifford was laid out in 1875. It was named for C. T. Gifford, who was instrumental in bringing the railroad there. By 1880, Gifford was at junction of two railroads. Gifford's population was 70 in 1902. Gifford's post office was established on November 9, 1875, and discontinued on February 28, 1907. Eldora is a city in Hardin County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,663 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. History Eldora was platted in 1853. It was incorporated on July 1, 1895. The name Eldora was given to the town by a local mother in honor of her dead infant daughter. It is derived from the Spanish name for "the gilded". Geography Eldora is located at (42.360155, -93.101325). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. Eldora is located on east edge of the Altmont Moraine, the glacial moraine that marks the east border of the Des Moines Lobe of the Wisconsin Glaciation. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
