Giannis And Thymios Retzos
Giannis (1896 – 5 March 1930) and Thymios Retzos (1899 – 5 March 1930) were a duo of Greek brothers, notorious criminals and serial killers active during the interwar period in Epirus. By the time they were arrested and executed in 1930, they had committed dozens of murders, robberies, kidnappings and thefts. Early crimes Both brothers originated from the small village of Anogeio, in Preveza. Giannis Retzos was born in 1896, while the younger brother, Thymios, was born in 1899. In 1917, while serving in the military in Ersekë, Giannis learned the identities of the men who had killed his father (he had disappeared in 1909, and it was revealed to be homicide after his skeleton was found in a hole). Wanting to avenge his death, he got in contact with Thymios, and both of them later hunted down and killed both men. After this, the Retzos, accompanied by several other accomplices, went into hiding in the mountains, where they terrorized locals until their 1924 arrest. ... Anogeio
Anogeio ( el, Ανώγειο, "High-land") is a village and a former municipality in the Preveza regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ziros, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 71.698 km2. Population 890 (2011). The seat of the municipality was in Gorgomylos. Anogeio village (population 61, elevation 1200 m) is located on the western slopes of Xerovouni, in the Pindus mountains of Epirus. It has a pleasant dry climate, which is predominantly influenced by its high altitude and distance from the sea. History The 19th and 20th Century history of the settlement is well documented. Its economy was almost exclusively based on sheep herding. The transhumant way of life was fairly typical of the rural populations of the Pindus range.
