Gholson Independent School District is a public school district based in Gholson, Texas (USA). The district has one school that serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve. In 2009, the school district was rated " recognized" by the Texas Education Agency. History At one time the district, which at that point covered grades PK-8, considered consolidating with another school district. Instead it opted to establish a high school. Gholson is a city in McLennan County, Texas, McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,061 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waco, Texas, Waco Waco metropolitan area, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area was settled in the 1840s, and was early known as Sardis. The name ''Gholson'', after early settlers, brothers Benjamin and Samuel Gholson, came into gradual use, and became the official name of the post office in 1887. Six-man football is a variant of gridiron football played with six players per team, instead of the standard 11 or 12. It is generally played by high schools in rural areas of the United States and Canada. History Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. The first game was played on Thursday, September 27, 1934, at the Hebron, Nebraska Athletic Gridiron, under the lights, with a crowd of almost 1000 watching. This game was played so that coaches all over Kansas and Nebraska could see if they wanted to try this new game of six-man. The two teams playing in the game were the combined team from Hardy-Chester ("Hard-Chests") and a combined team from Belvidere-Alexandria ("Belvalex"). The ''Waco Tribune-Herald'' is an American daily newspaper serving Waco, Texas, and vicinity. Background The newspaper has its roots in five predecessors, beginning with the ''Waco Evening Telephone'' in 1892. The ''Tribune-Herald'' took its current identity when E.S. Fentress and Charles Marsh, who owned the ''Waco News-Tribune,'' bought the ''Waco Times-Herald.'' That purchase was the beginning of Newspapers, Inc., a chain that eventually owned 13 newspapers. The newspapers stayed in the Fentress family until 1976, when they were sold to Cox Newspapers, which continued to own the chain until 2009, when Waco businessman Clifton Robinson bought the paper.
