Ghanaian Australians are Australian citizens and residents of Ghanaian origin and descent. More than 50% of those who are Ghana-born live in Sydney. Background The Special Commonwealth African Assistance Plan allowed students from West African countries, including from Ghana, to come to Australia the mid-1960s. More than 70 per cent of these students remained in Australia following military coups in their countries. While small in number, the Ghana-born steadily increased from the mid-1970s following the easing of immigration restrictions. The majority of Ghanaian Australians are skilled and educated, with 70.6% of the Ghana-born aged 15 years and over possessing higher non-school qualifications, compared to 55.9% of the Australian population. Flag Of Ghana
The national flag of Ghana consists of a horizontal triband of Red, Gold, and Green. It was designed in replacement of the British Gold Coast's Blue Ensign. The flag was adopted upon the independence of the Dominion of Ghana on March 6, 1957. It was designed the same year by Theodosia Okoh, a renowned Ghanaian artist. The flag was flown until 1964 and it was then reinstated in 1966. The flag of Ghana consists of the Ethiopian Pan-African colours of red, yellow, and green in horizontal stripes with a black five-pointed star in the centre of the gold stripe. The Ghanaian flag was the second African flag after the flag of the Ethiopian Empire to feature these colours, although the colours are inverted. Selasi Berdie
Selasi Berdie (born 3 February 1986) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer playing two matches with the Gold Coast Titans, as prop. He is believed to be the first player of African descent to play in the National Rugby League. Early years Berdie grew up in Melbourne and played tennis before taking up rugby league. Berdie graduated with a double degree in sports science and management in 2008. Queensland Cup In 2008 Berdie was signed by the Gold Coast Titans and was assigned to play for a feeder club, the Tweed Heads Seagulls, in the Queensland Cup. Kwame Yeboah
Kwame Adzenyina Yeboah (born 2 June 1994) is an Australian former professional footballer who played as a forward. Yeboah played youth football with the Queensland Academy of Sport and Gold Coast United before making his professional debut for Brisbane Roar in 2013. In 2014, he moved to Germany to play for Borussia Mönchengladbach II. Following a loan at SC Paderborn and a move to Fortuna Köln, he returned to Australia joining Western Sydney Wanderers. Brandon Walker
Brandon Walker (born 17 October 2002) is an Australian rules football player who plays for Fremantle in the Australian Football League (AFL). A member of Fremantle's Next Generation Academy (NGA) due to being born in Ghana, Walker was drafted with the 50th selection in the 2020 national draft, when Fremantle matched Essendon's bid. He had played junior football for East Fremantle and represented Western Australia at Under 16 and Under 18 levels. His twin brother, Chris, also plays football for East Fremantle. Isaac Quaynor
Isaac Quaynor (born 15 January 2000) is a professional Australian rules footballer with Ghanaian descent who plays for the Collingwood Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Quaynor participated in the Auskick program at Doncaster East, Victoria. He played junior football with the Doncaster East Football Club with future Collingwood teammate Tom Phillips. He then joined Oakleigh Chargers, where he was coached by Anthony Phillips, Tom's father. Quaynor played junior football for the Templestowe Football Club and for Bulleen-Templestowe Football Club in the Yarra Junior Football League. Kofi Owusu-Ansah (born 1998 Ghana), known by his stage name Genesis Owusu, is a Ghanaian-Australian singer from Canberra.
