Ghana Bar Association
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) is a professional association of lawyers in Ghana, including what used to be called solicitors and barristers but are now called legal practitioners, as well as magistrates. By convention all lawyers admitted to practice in Ghana become automatic members of the association. The GBA has its roots in the Gold Coast Bar Association, the first president of which was Sierra Leonean lawyer Francis (Frans) Dove. History and membership The British parliament established the Supreme Court of Judicature for the Gold Coast Colony in 1876, with a Chief Justice and no more than four Puisne Justices. John Mensah Sarbah was the first native of Ghana to be called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn in 1887. The legal system was based on that of England, in which solicitors provide legal advice and prepare legal documents, while barristers act as advocates in court. Joe Reindorf
Joe Reindorf (1924 – 1996) was a Ghanaian historian, lawyer and politician. He served in the third republic as Attorney General and minister for Justice of Ghana. Early life and education Formerly a pupil of Achimota School, his contemporaries included K. B. Asante, Victor Owusu and R. R. Amponsah. He was a research student in history at Cambridge University in 1951, completing his studies in 1956 and finishing a law degree at the same time. Career He was called to the English bar in 1954. He returned to Ghana after his research studies in 1956 to enter into private legal practice. In 1962 he joined the University of Ghana as a research fellow in history. This stint ended in 1966 when he went back into private practice. He was president of the Ghana Bar Association in 1970–1971. General Legal Council
The General Legal Council is the body that regulates the Legal Profession in Ghana. It was set up in 1960 by an act of parliament, The Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32). Its role was to oversee legal education and the legal profession in the country. Cape Coast
Cape Coast is a city, fishing port, and the capital of Cape Coast Metropolitan District and Central Region of Ghana. It is one of the country's most historic cities, a World Heritage Site, home to the Cape Coast Castle, with the Gulf of Guinea situated to its south. According to the 2010 census, Cape Coast had a settlement population of 169,894 people. The language of the people of Cape Coast is Fante. The International Bar Association (IBA), founded in 1947, is a bar association of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA currently has a membership of more than 80,000 individual lawyers and 190 bar associations and law societies. Nene Amegatcher
Nene Abayateye Ofoe Amegatcher is a Ghanaian lawyer, academic and judge. He has been an active justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana since 2018. He was born in Suhum, where he began his formal education. After his call to the Bar in 1980, he began teaching while working as a private legal practitioner. Prior to his appointment, he was the managing partner of Sam Okudzeto and Associates and a senior lecturer at the Ghana School of Law since 1994. Amegatcher is a member of the Ghana Bar Association and once served as president of the association from 2012 to 2015. Sam Okudzeto
Samuel Awuku Okudzeto (born ) is a Ghanaian politician and lawyer. In 2011, he was chair of the International Advisory Commission of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and a member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. He is a former Member of Parliament in Ghana. Early years Sam Okudzeto was his mother's ninth child, in a polygamous family. When he was three his mother separated from his father and they went to Mafi Kumasi in the Volta Region. At the age of ten he went to stay with his father at Adidome, where he attended the Presbyterian School.
