Gervais Martel
Gervais Martel (born 20 November 1954 in Oignies) is a French businessman who served as the president of French Association football, football club RC Lens from 1988 to 2012 and 2013 to 2017. Under his leadership, Lens won their first ever Ligue 1, Division 1 title in the 1997–98 French Division 1, 1997–98 season, and won their first ever Coupe de la Ligue title the following year. Martel is also a vice-president of the French Football Federation and serves on the federation's Federal Council. Oignies
Oignies (; pcd, Ongnies) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Oignies is a former coalmining town, nowadays a light industrial town, northeast of Lens, at the junction of the D46 and the D160 roads. The A1 autoroute passes through the commune, alongside a wooded and lake-filled parkland area. History Ancient times The town of Oignies seems to have been inhabited since early Christian times. Then it was known as Ongniacume. Coal is discovered In the grounds of the Château of Mme De Clercq on 7 June 1842 an Engineer, Monsieur Mulot, discovered the presence of coal, an economic godsend for the region which then developed a huge mining industry. Ligue 1, officially known as Ligue 1 Uber Eats for sponsorship reasons, is a French professional league for men's association football clubs. At the top of the French football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Administrated by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, Ligue 1 is contested by 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation from and to Ligue 2. Seasons run from August to May. 1997–98 French Division 1
The 1997–98 Division 1 was the 60th season of Division 1, the top French professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1932. The season began on 2 August 1997, and concluded on 9 May 1998. This season saw a change in the league format, with the number of teams reduced to 18 from 20, shortening the season from 38 to 34 rounds. As a result, four clubs which had been relegated at the end of the previous season were replaced by only two, Châteauroux and Toulouse, who entered as winners and runners up of the 1996–97 French Division 2. Defending champions of the 1996–97 season were Monaco. Lens won the championship for the first time in their 92-year history, becoming the 26th club to become French football champions. The Coupe de la Ligue (), known outside France as the French League Cup, was a Single-elimination tournament, knockout cup competition in Football in France, French football organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel. The tournament was established in 1993 and, unlike the Coupe de France, was only open to professional clubs in France which play in country's French football league system, top three football divisions, though the Championnat National, third is not fully professional. The most successful team in the competition was Paris Saint-Germain F.C., Paris Saint-Germain with nine wins, including the last edition in 2019–20 Coupe de la Ligue, 2019–20.
