Gertrud Berger
Gertrud Berger (15 December 1870 – 26 December 1949) was a German painter of landscapes and still life associated with the town of Greifswald. Life Berger was born in 1870 in Bergen auf Rügen Bergen auf Rügen is the capital of the former district of Rügen in the middle of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Since 1 January 2005, Bergen has moreover been the administrative seat of the ''Amt'' of Bergen auf .... She was the second child of Marie Wilhelmine Friederike Tiburtius and her husband Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand Berger, a lawyer and notary. She was baptized on 1 February 1871 at her home by the deacon of the St Mary's Church (Bergen), Bublitz. Gertrud Berger studied in Berlin where she was a student of Max Uth, L. Meyer, and Ernst Kolbe (1876-1945). Her subjects were landscapes and still lifes. Afterwards she lived and worked in Greifswald. Bergen Auf Rügen
Bergen auf Rügen is the capital of the former district of Rügen in the middle of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. Since 1 January 2005, Bergen has moreover been the administrative seat of the ''Amt'' of Bergen auf Rügen, which with a population of over 23,000 is Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most populous ''Amt''. Geography Location Bergen is in the middle of Germany's biggest island, Rügen, on the Baltic Sea coast. The town lies in a hilly area, with the Rugard woods on the town's northeast outskirts reaching a height of 91 m above sea level. The area around Bergen is predominantly agricultural. The town itself is built on a glacial moraine deposited when the ice sheets retreated during the last ice age. A still is an apparatus used to distill liquid mixtures by heating to selectively boil and then cooling to condense the vapor. A still uses the same concepts as a basic distillation apparatus, but on a much larger scale. Stills have been used to produce perfume and medicine, water for injection (WFI) for pharmaceutical use, generally to separate and purify different chemicals, and to produce distilled beverages containing ethanol. Application Since ethanol boils at a much lower temperature than water, simple distillation can separate ethanol from water by applying heat to the mixture. Historically, a copper vessel was used for this purpose, since copper removes undesirable sulfur-based compounds from the alcohol. However, many modern stills are made of stainless steel pipes with copper linings to prevent erosion of the entire vessel and lower copper levels in the waste product (which in large distilleries is processed to become animal feed).
