Gerry James
Edwin Fitzgerald (Gerry) James (born October 22, 1934) is a former professional Canadian football running back and professional ice hockey player. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). His is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, like his father, Eddie James (Canadian football), Eddie James, who also played for the Blue Bombers. James was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. In a period overlapping the 1959 CFL season and 1959–60 NHL season, James became the only player to play in the CFL's Grey Cup (November 28, 1959—won cup) and the NHL's Stanley Cup (first game April 9, 1960—lost cup) in the same season. The Edmonton Eskimos upset the Montreal Alouettes to send the Grey Cup trophy back west for the first time since 1948. Normie Kwong
Norman Lim Kwong (born Kwong Lim Yew; ; October 24, 1929 – September 3, 2016) was a Canadian football player who played for the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was also an active businessman and politician being part owner of the Calgary Flames and serving as the 16th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta from January 2005 to May 2010. The son of Chinese immigrants from Taishan, Guangdong, Kwong was the first Canadian professional gridiron football player of Chinese heritage. In addition, Kwong was also the first person of Chinese heritage to serve as lieutenant-governor of Alberta. As a former vice-regal representative of Alberta, he was styled "The Honourable" for life. Mike Pringle (Canadian Football)
Michael A. Pringle (born October 1, 1967) is an American former professional football player. A running back, he had a successful career in the Canadian Football League (CFL), during which he set or tied almost every significant league records for the position. He played college football for the California State University, Fullerton Titans and was twice signed by National Football League (NFL) teams, though he saw very limited playing time. Along with George Reed and Johnny Bright, Pringle is one of the players most often mentioned as being the greatest running back in CFL history. Jim Germany (born February 2, 1953), is a former star running back in the Canadian Football League. Pasquale "Pat" Abbruzzi (August 29, 1932 – June 3, 1998) was an American college and professional Canadian football running back and a successful high school football coach. Abbruzzi played collegiately for the University of Rhode Island (Class of 1955), and professionally for the Canadian Football League Montreal Alouettes for four years ( 1955–1959). Early life and college career Abbruzzi was born and raised in Warren, Rhode Island and is the younger brother of former NFL player, Lou "Duke" Abbruzzi. Charlie Shepard
Charles "Charlie" LaFayette Shepard was an award-winning, all-star and Grey Cup champion running back in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1957 to 1962. A graduate of North Texas State University, Shepard played with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1956, rushing for 91 yards in 12 games. He next joined the Blue Bombers in 1957 for an all-star 6-year stay. Bob McNamara (Canadian Football)
John Robert "Bob" McNamara (August 12, 1931 – July 20, 2014) was an American football all-star running back in the Canadian Football League and the American Football League. A star with the collegiate Minnesota Gophers, their team MVP in 1954, McNamara was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. Instead, he turned directly north and signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. However, the promise he showed was unfulfilled, as his career was beset with injury. In 1955, he rushed for only 51 yards. 1956 is when he showed his true form, rushing for 1101 yards, catching 36 passes for another 512 yards, scoring 17 touchdowns, and intercepting two passes. Leo Everett Lewis Jr. (February 4, 1933 – August 30, 2013) was an American gridiron football player and coach. He played college football as a running back for Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri from 1951 to 1954 and professionally with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) from 1955 to 1966. Tom Casey (Canadian Football)
Thomas Ray Casey, better known as Tom "Citation" Casey (July 30, 1924 – October 10, 2002) played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Western Interprovincial Football Union from 1950 to 1956, during which time he led the league in rushing yards and was named a divisional all-star each year. He was elected into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1964, the first African American to be inducted. He also played one year for the Hamilton Wildcats in 1949. He was named to the All-Time Blue Bomber Greats 75th Anniversary team. Casey was a practicing medical doctor. Casey attended Hampton University. Lorne Benson
Lorne "Boom Boom" Benson (September 16, 1930 – April 3, 2012) was an award winning fullback who played in the Canadian Football League for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1951 to 1955. Benson first played in 1951, but nonetheless won the Dr. Beattie Martin Trophy for Canadian rookie of the year in the west in 1952 on the strength of his 491 rushing yards. He rushed for a career-high 561 yards in 1953 and finished, after 5 years with the Blue Bombers, with 1671 rushing yards and 31 pass receptions, for 11 TDs. He holds the CFL record for most points in a playoff game with 30 and most touchdowns in a playoff game with six. Both records were set on Oct. 28, 1953 against Saskatchewan. Benson died April 3, 2012, at the age of 81. |
