Germany At The 2009 World Championships In Athletics
Germany will compete at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics from 15–23 August as the host nation. A team of 92 athletes was announced in preparation for the competition, but current women's Marathon world leader Irina Mikitenko and hurdler Thomas Goller withdrew from the Championships. Mikitenko was replaced by the current European Champion Ulrike Maisch. Selected athletes have achieved one of the competition's qualifying standards. Six out of the seven medallists for Germany from the last Championships are competing, including the gold medallists Betty Heidler and Franka Dietzsch. The 100 metres, or 100-meter dash, is a sprint race in track and field competitions. The shortest common outdoor running distance, the dash is one of the most popular and prestigious events in the sport of athletics. Robin Schembera (born 1 October 1988 in Halle (Saale)) is a German middle distance runner who specialises in the 800 metres. In the age classes, Schembera finished sixth at the 2005 World Youth Championships, won the 2007 European Junior Championships and won a bronze medal at the 2009 European U23 Championships. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or meters ( US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional English racing distance. 800m is 4.67m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic endurance with anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Sorina Nwachukwu (born August 21, 1987 in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German sprinter of Nigerian descent, who specialized in the 400 metres. Biography Kosenkow was born in Tokmok, Kirghiz SSR, but represented Germany at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The 200 metres, or 200-meter dash, is a sprint running event. On an outdoor 400 metre racetrack, the race begins on the curve and ends on the home straight, so a combination of techniques is needed to successfully run the race. A slightly shorter race, called the '' stadion'' and run on a straight track, was the first recorded event at the ancient Olympic Games.
