The German Olympic Sports Confederation (german: Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund or DOSB) was founded on 20 May 2006 by a merger of the ''Deutscher Sportbund'' (DSB), and the ''Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland'' (NOK) which dates back to 1895, the year it was founded and recognized as NOC by the IOC. Ernst Baier (27 September 1905 in Zittau, Saxony, Germany – 8 July 2001 in Garmisch, Bavaria, Germany) was a German figure skater who competed in pair skating and single skating. He became Olympic pair champion in 1936 together with Maxi Herber. The duo also won several World and European championships. Ernst Baier skated for the club Berliner SC. He also enjoyed success as a single skater. He won silver at European, World and Olympic games in singles. Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier revolutionized pair skating by performing the first side by side jumps in competition. After the Second World War they skated in ice revues. Georg Gyssling (16 June 1893 – 8 January 1965) was German consul to the United States from 1927 until 1941, since 1933 in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Nazi Party from 1931. Early life Gyssling was born in 1893 in Walzen, Upper Silesia, in Imperial Germany. He enlisted in the Imperial German Army during World War I, and after the war earned a doctorate of German law. He became a diplomat for the German Foreign Office and in 1927 arrived in the United States as a German Consul. Olympic career Gyssling was also a bobsledder who competed in the early 1930s. The German team finished seventh and last in the four-man event at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Baron Gerhard Rudolf Viktor von Hessert (August 18, 1906 – September 22, 1994) was a German bobsledder who competed in the early 1930s. Early life Von Hessert was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, the youngest of four siblings, to Friedrich von Hessert and Viktoria von Herff. Most of his childhood was spent in constant movement due to the nature of his father's mining business. Both sides of the family had political ties in Hesse. His paternal uncle was first district attorney in Darmstadt and his maternal grandfather was a member of the privy council. His paternal great-grandfather Dr. Franz Ferdinand von Hessert was royal physician to Ludwig I and a vaccination pioneer. Moritz Karl Ferdinand Wilhelm Hermann Walther Mumm von Schwarzenstein (1887 – 1959) was a German businessman and bobsledder who competed in the early 1930s. He was the one-time "champagne king" of Rheims in France, as part of the Mumm champagne making family. Biography Von Mumm was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1887, son to Peter Arnold Gottlieb Hermann Mumm von Schwarzenstein and Emma Luise Marie Passavant. He was an aviation pioneer who went to the United States in 1910 as pilot of the French entry in the Gordon Bennett Cup. While in the U.S., he met Frances Scoville, daughter of a Seneca, Kansas, banker. They were married at St George's, Hanover Square in London.
