Germantown is a town in Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2020 census, down slightly from 1,954 in 2010. Germantown is located in the South West part of the county along the East side of the Hudson River. History Early indigenous history The area currently known as Germantown was originally occupied by the Mohicans. In the early eighteenth century, Hendrick Aupaumut recorded the movement of his people that had earlier brought them to settle along the rivers that would later be named the Delaware and Hudson. Those who had continued north settled in the valley of the river they named the Mahicannituck (today's Hudson River), meaning the Waters That Are Never Still. They named themselves the Muh-he-con-neok after the river, a name that eventually evolved to the present day Mohican or Mahican. The Mohicans settled in the valley, building wigwams and longhouses. Germantown is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Germantown in Columbia County, New York, United States, on the east side of the Hudson River. The population of the CDP was 845 at the 2010 census, out of a total town population of 1,954. Geography Germantown is located at (42.135865, -73.887886). The CDP includes all of the hamlet of Germantown but also extends north as far as North Germantown and south to include most of the hamlet of Cheviot. The CDP is bordered to the west by the Hudson River; to the north by Anchorage Road, Northern Boulevard, and Camp Creek Road; to the east by Hover Avenue and Church Avenue; and to the south by Roundtop Road and Cheviot Road. New York State Route 9G passes through Germantown, leading north to Hudson and south to Annandale-on-Hudson. Clarksville is a town located in Allegany County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 982. The town is named after S.N. Clark, an agent of the Holland Land Company. The town is in the southwest part of Allegany County, northeast of Olean. History The first settlers arrived around 1822. The town of Clarksville was founded in 1835, taking away part of the town of Cuba. Port Jervis is a city located at the confluence of the Neversink and Delaware rivers in western Orange County, New York, United States, north of the Delaware Water Gap. Its population was 8,775 at the 2020 census. The communities of Deerpark, Huguenot, Sparrowbush, and Greenville are adjacent to Port Jervis. Matamoras, Pennsylvania, is across the river and connected by bridge. Montague Township, New Jersey, borders here. The Tri-States Monument, marking the tripoint between New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, lies at the southwestern corner of town.
