German Film Critics Association Awards
The Preis der deutschen Filmkritik is a prize given by the German Film Critics Association, awarded to the best German films of the past year. The Preis der deutschen Filmkritik is the only German film prize issued exclusively by film critics. The announcement and award ceremony takes place at the Berlinale, and is conducted in cooperation with ''Moviepilot''. The prizes for the best experimental film and for the best short film are awarded at the Media & Art Festival in Osnabrück and at the Dresden Film Festival, respectively. The Preis der deutschen Filmkritik was awarded irregularly from 1956 to 1963 in varying categories. From 1968, the prize was awarded regularly in the areas of feature (Spielfilm), short film (Kurzfilm) and documentary film (Dokumentarfilm). Philip Gröning (born 7 April 1959 in Düsseldorf) is a German director, documentary film maker and screenwriter. Career Gröning was raised in Germany and US, but also traveled extensively. He studied Medicine and Psychology before beginning in the cinema with some acting. In 1986 he began doing his own films. His first documentary was ''The Last Picture Taken.'' In 2005 he gained acclaim for ''Into Great Silence''. Into Great Silence
''Into Great Silence'' (german: Die große Stille) is a 2005 documentary film directed by Philip Gröning. An international co-production between France, Switzerland and Germany, it is an intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, a monastery high in the French Alps (Chartreuse Mountains). Production Gröning proposed the idea for the film to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. They responded to him 16 years later to say they were willing to permit him to shoot the movie if he was still interested. Gröning then came alone to live at the monastery, and to stay in the enclosure, where except of the order's aspirants no visitors are allowed, for a total of six months in 2002 and 2003. Axel Prahl
Axel Prahl (born 26 March 1960 in Eutin) is a German actor and musician. Prahl, born in Eutin, grew up in nearby Neustadt in Holstein. After his A-levels, Prahl started studying music and mathematics, but then went on to acting school in Kiel. His acting debut came in 1994 in a television series for ZDF. Aside from his film acting, for which he has won several accolades including two Adolf Grimme Awards, Prahl has starred in 23 episodes of the German television crime series ''Tatort''. Prahl also co-starred in the 2009 German TV film ''12 Winter'' with Jürgen Vogel. Robert Thalheim (born July 2, 1974, in Berlin) is a German stage and film director and screenwriter. Thalheim was an assistant director at the ''Berliner Ensemble'' in 1997–98. He then studied modern German literature, history and politics at the Free University of Berlin until the year 2000; during this period he edited the first issues of the culture magazine ''Plotky''. In 2000 he began to study film directing at the ''Filmhochschule'' (film school) in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Short biographical listing by an agency.
