The German Film Award for Best Documentary Film () is the award given to the best feature-length cinema documentary produced with majoritarian German funding. The current category was introduced in 2000, although numerous similar categories were in existence going back all the way to 1951. As of 2020, besides the Lola statuette in gold, the winning film also receives 200.000 euros. A nomination is endowed with 100.00 euros. In 2012 the number of nominated films was raised from two to three. The German Film Award (), also known as Lola after its prize statuette, is the national film award of Germany. It is presented at an annual ceremony honouring cinematic achievements in the German film industry. Besides being the most important film award in Germany, it is also the most highly endowed German cultural award, with cash prizes in its current 20 categories totalling nearly three million euros. From 1951 to 2004 it was awarded by a commission, but since 2005 the award has been organized by the German Film Academy ( Deutsche Filmakademie). ''Workingman's Death'' is a 2005 Austrian-German documentary film written and directed by Michael Glawogger. It premiered at the 2005 Venice Film Festival. Markus Imhoof (born 19 September 1941) is a Swiss film director, screenwriter, theatre and opera director. Biography He began his career as a documentary maker, focusing on controversial issues. His 1968 film ''Rondo'' was a critical look at the prison system in Switzerland. The film was banned until 1975. His next picture, ''Ormenis 199+69'' (1969) also met with censorship, as it examined the role and treatment of horses in the cavalry and suggested that the unit ought to be disbanded. Imhoof was forced to make some edits before the film could be screened in public, removing scenes that military veterans found objectionable. Only in 2002 did the film became available in uncensored form. Corinna Belz is a German documentary filmmaker. She is known for the films '' Gerhard Richter Painting'' (2011), '' Peter Handke: In the Woods, Might Be Late'' (2016) and '' Inside the Uffizi'' (2021). Life and career Corinna Belz studied philosophy, art history and media studies in Cologne and Berlin. After her first film about Gerhard Richter's Cologne Cathedral Window (2007), Belz made the feature length documentary '' Gerhard Richter Painting'' (2011). In 2017, Richter and Belz developed the abstract film ''Moving Picture (946-3)'', for which Steve Reich wrote the composition "Reich/Richter". Gian-Piero Ringel (born 1976 in Göppingen, Baden-Württemberg) is a German producer. Gian-Piero Ringel studied film production at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb). ''Pina'' is a 2011 German 3D film, 3D documentary film about the contemporary dance choreographer Pina Bausch. It was directed by Wim Wenders. Marcus Attila Vetter (* 1967 in Stuttgart) is a German documentary filmmaker. Life and career Vetter was born to a Turkish father, Cahit Cubuk, and a German mother. After studying in Worms, Buenos Aires and Madrid (with a focus on European Business Management among others) Vetter started working as a trainee at the production company Bavaria Film in Munich and graduated in Media Studies and Practice at the University of Tübingen in 1994. Niko von Glasow (''né'' Brücher; born 1960) is a German film director and producer. The founder and Artistic Director of Palladio Film, von Glasow began his training with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and then worked for many film directors including Georg Stefan Troller, Hellmuth Costard, Alexander Kluge, Peter Zadek and Jean-Jacques Annaud before going on to study film at New York University and at the National Film School in Łódź, Poland.
