Gerling Preis
The Gerling-Preis is a Group 2 flat horse race in Germany open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles) at Cologne in late April or early May. History The event was established in 1921, and it was originally called the Preis von Birlinghoven. Its distance frequently changed during the early part of its history. Robert Gerling, an insurance entrepreneur, became the sponsor of the race in 1934. From this point it was known as the Gerling-Preis. The race began its current period over 2,400 metres in 1969. It held Group 3 status from 1972 to 1974, and from 1984 to 1988. It was raised to Group 2 level in 1989. The Gerling-Preis is Germany's oldest surviving sponsored horse race. Nebos
Nebos (30 March 1976 – 26 June 1999) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best horses of his generation in Germany at the age of two winning three races including the Zukunfts Rennen. In the following year he won the Dr. Busch-Memorial, Union-Rennen, Grosser Preis von Berlin and Preis von Europa as well as finishing second to Königsstuhl in both the Deutsches Derby and the Aral-Pokal. Nebos emerged as the best racehorse in Germany in 1980, winning five races including the Gerling-Preis, Grosser Preis von Dortmund, Grosser Preis von Baden, Grosser Preis von Düsseldorf and the Grosser Preis von Berlin for the second time as well as being beaten less than two lengths in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Alan Swinbank
Alan Swinbank (c.1945 – 17 May 2017) was a British racehorse trainer whose horses competed in both Flat racing and National Hunt racing. Swinbank was based at racing stables in Melsonby, North Yorkshire. He trained the winners of more than 800 races in a career lasting from 1982 until his death, and gained his most notable success with Collier Hill. He died suddenly on 17 May 2017, aged 72. Dean McKeown
Dean Russell McKeown (born 5 February 1960) is a retired British Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He embarked on his professional career as a teenager, earning his first win in 1977. While never a Champion jockey, McKeown has won a number of important Conditions races in the United Kingdom including three editions of the Cambridgeshire Handicap at Newmarket Racecourse. He also won the Ebor Handicap (2002) and Chester Cup (2003) aboard Hugs Dancer then in the fall of 2004 became the regular jockey for trainer Alan Swinbank where he became an integral part of the racing success of Collier Hill. Throughout his career he earned a reputation for being one of the most astute form judges in the weighing-room. Collier Hill
Collier Hill (foaled 26 March 1998) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred by the prominent American sportsman George W. Strawbridge, Jr. who was involved in both steeplechase and flat racing and who raced in Europe and the United States. Background Out of the mare Polar Queen, a granddaughter of Danzig, Collier Hill was sired by the 1992 Epsom Derby winner, Dr Devious. He was an unbroken three-year-old when Melsonby trainer Alan Swinbank purchased him at the 2001 Ascot Bloodstock Sales for £5,500. Swinbank sold a half-interest in the horse to Russell Hall and then the remaining half to Ashley Young. Renamed from Dr Freeze to Collier Hill after a hill on a farm owned by Hall, the horse suffered from a number of physical ailments and his race conditioning was a slow process. Andrasch Starke (born 4 January 1974, in Germany) is a jockey in international Thoroughbred horse racing. Starke began racing at age fifteen as an amateur and since turning professional has won the German riding championship six times. He has competed in Canada and the United States and has won races in Dubai, France, Italy, and Singapore. Andreas Schütz
Andreas Schütz (born 19 February 1968) is a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. From a prominent racing family, he is the fourth generation to train professionally. Andreas Schütz started out as an amateur jockey, winning four German championships from 1984–1987 and the European championship in 1987. In 1992 he began working as an assistant trainer for his father Bruno Schütz who had built one of the Germany's most successful public training stables. Due to health problems, his father retired and in 1998 Andreas took over the running of the stable. Highly successful, Andreas Schütz has won numerous German Group one races including the five wins in both the Deutsches Derby and the Preis der Diana. Lanfranco Dettori (; born 15 December 1970), better known as Frankie Dettori, is an Italian horse racing jockey based in the United Kingdom. Dettori has been British flat racing Champion Jockey three times and has ridden the winners of more than 500 Group races. This includes 20 winners of the English classics. His most celebrated achievement was riding all seven winners on British Champions' Day at Ascot Racecourse in 1996.
