Gerald Hill (politician)
Gerald Irvine Hill (February 1, 1919 – February 22, 1997) was an insurance company executive and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Labrador South from 1962 to 1971 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Captain Sidney and Sophie Hill, he was born in Wesleyville and was educated at Prince of Wales College and Acadia University. He joined Confederation Life in 1942; in 1961, he became manager for the Newfoundland division. He was elected to the Newfoundland assembly by acclamation in a 1962 by-election held following the death of George Sellars. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region. The province comprises the island of Newfoundland and the continental region of Labrador, having a total size of 405,212 square kilometres (156,500 sq mi). Cartwright-L'Anse Au Clair
Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 3,131 eligible voters living within the district. The district covers remote communities in Southern Labrador that are mostly dependent on fishery. The district includes: Black Tickle, Charlottetown, Capstan Island, Cartwright, Domino, Forteau, L'Anse Amour, L'Anse au Clair, L'Anse au Loup, Lodge Bay, Mary's Harbour, Norman Bay, Paradise River, Pinsent's Arm, Pinware, Port Hope Simpson, Red Bay, St. Lewis, West St. Modeste and William's Harbour. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Wesleyville, Newfoundland And Labrador
Wesleyville is a small coastal community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located on the Straight Shore of Bonavista Bay, on the northeast coast of Newfoundland, near the communities of Greenspond and Newtown. It was settled in the early 19th century, when residents relocated from nearby islands. History The first settlers originally lived on Swain's Island, which is often called the "parent of Wesleyville." They moved to the mainland between 1870 and 1930 to what is now called Wesleyville. Wesleyville was named in 1884 after John Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist movement. By 1891 the population was close to 2,000. The town relied mostly on the Labrador fishery. Prince Of Wales Collegiate
Prince of Wales Collegiate is a public high school located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It served part of St. John's as well as the rural community of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's. The school was erected in 1959. At that time it was called United Collegiate and along with Prince of Wales College on LeMarchant Road was governed by The United Church School Board. In 1962, Prince of Wales College closed as a high school and this school was renamed Prince of Wales Collegiate. A major extension to the original building was erected in 1993. Acadia University is a public, predominantly undergraduate university located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada, with some graduate programs at the master's level and one at the doctoral level. The enabling legislation consists of the Acadia University Act and the Amended Acadia University Act 2000. George Sellars
George Maurice Victor Sellars (16 April 18867 June 1917) was a rugby union player who represented New Zealand fifteen times, including two Test matches. He played club rugby for Ponsonby, and was first selected for Auckland in 1910, and in 1912 gained international selection for New Zealand Māori. Sellars was selected for the All Blacksas New Zealand's international team is knownfor their 1913 tour of North America where he played fourteen matches. As well, he was also in the All Blacks' side that played Australia immediately prior to their tour. Although unavailable to play for New Zealand the following year, he did represent the Māori again that season. In 1915 Sellars enlisted for service in the First War War, and he was fatally wounded in 1917 at the Battle of Messines. He has no known grave and his name is among those recorded on the Messines Ridge (New Zealand) Memorial, at the Messines Ridge British Cemetery.
