Georgios Makaras
Georgios Makaras (alternate spelling: Giorgos) ( el, Γιώργος Μακαράς; born June 30, 1966) is a former Greek professional basketball player. During his playing career, at a height of 1.98 m (6'6") tall, he played at the shooting guard and small forward positions. Professional career Makaras started playing youth sports club, club basketball with his local hometown team, Thyella Serron, in 1979. After the 1984–85 season, Thyella was promotion and relegation, promoted up to Greece's top-tier level Greek Basket League. Makaras was one of the headliners of the 1984–85 Thyella team that earned that league promotion. Makaras then played in the top-level Greek Basket League, for the first time, in the 1985–86 season. Serres
Sérres ( el, Σέρρες ) is a city in Macedonia, Greece, capital of the Serres regional unit and second largest city in the region of Central Macedonia, after Thessaloniki. Serres is one of the administrative and economic centers of Northern Greece. The Greek Basketball Cup or Hellenic Basketball Cup (Greek language, Greek: Κύπελλο Ελλάδος καλαθοσφαίρισης ανδρών) is the top-tier level annual pro basketball national cup competition in Greece. It is organized by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.). History and format There were no official nation-wide Greek Cup competitions prior to the 1975–76 season. However, there was a precursor tournament to the Greek Cup, called the Attica State Cup, which was won by AEK Athens B.C., AEK, in the 1966–67 and 1970–71 seasons. The Hellenic Basketball Federation ( el, Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Καλαθοσφαίρισης, abbreviated as Ε.Ο.Κ.) is the main basketball governing body for the sport in Greece. Greek National Basketball Team
The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final. Greece took part the in the EuroBasket 28 times, winning the tournament twice; while also coming away with one silver ( 1989) as well as two bronze medals (1949, 2009).
