Georgia Welcome Center
The Georgia Welcome Center was built in 1961 and formally dedicated early in 1962. Includes 26 photos from 2011. This was the first welcome center in Georgia, predating the arrival of the Interstate Highway System along the Georgia Coast. It is reportedly the oldest roadside welcome center in the U.S. that is still used for that purpose. Sylvania, Georgia
Sylvania is a town in and the county seat of Screven County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,956 at the 2010 census. History The area was inhabited for thousands of years by various cultures of indigenous peoples. By the time of European encounter, it was occupied by the Yuchi peoples, but some Creeks, the Uchee's allies, moved into the area during Colonial times. The town of Sylvania was founded in 1790 by settlers migrating to the area after the American Revolutionary War. The word "Sylvania" comes from the Latin word ''sylvan'' or '' sylva '' which means "forest land" or "place in the woods." Sylvania was part of the Black Belt of Georgia, developed for cultivation after the cotton gin made it easier to handle short-fiber cotton. Screven County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,067. The county seat is Sylvania. History The county was created on December 14, 1793, and was named for General James Screven, who died fighting in Georgia during the American Revolutionary War. Some wartime accounts used the alternate spelling of "Scriven" for the general, and the county's name was often spelled that way in its early history, as reflected on 19th-century Georgia maps.
