State Route 68 (SR 68) is an state highway that travels south-to-north, in the shape of the letter L, through portions of Washington County in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects SR 57 southeast of Oconee with SR 24/ SR 540 and SR 24 Spur west of Sandersville. Route description SR 68 begins at an intersection with SR 57 southeast of Oconee. It heads to the north-northeast to an intersection with SR 272. Then, it continues northeast until it enters Tenille. There, SR 68 has a short concurrency with SR 15. Oconee is a city in Washington County, Georgia, United States. The population was 280 at the 2000 census. History The city's name derives from the Oconee people (also known as the Hitchiti), a Muskogean-speaking tribe who inhabited central Georgia at time of contact with European-American settlers. The Oconee lived in present-day Baldwin County, Georgia at a settlement known as Oconee Old Town, later moving to the Chattahoochee River in the early 18th century. The name exists in several variations, including Ocone, Oconi, Ocony, and Ekwoni. The city of Oconee was named after the river that bears the tribe's name. It was founded in the early 1840s, when the railroad was extended to that point. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Oconee as a town in 1876. State Route 57 (SR 57) is a state highway that travels northwest-to-southeast through portions of Bibb, Jones, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Washington, Johnson, Emanuel, Candler, Tattnall, Long, and McIntosh counties in the central and southeastern parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects the eastern part of the Macon area to the Eulonia area, via Swainsboro. State Route 272 (SR 272) is a north–south state highway located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its path is entirely within Washington County. Route description SR 272 begins at an oblique intersection with SR 68 northwest of Wrightsville, in the southwestern part of Washington County. It heads north, passing Bay Branch Cemetery. Then, it curves to the northwest to intersections with McBride Lane and Deer Hunter Road, in rapid succession. Just past Deer Hunter Road, the highway passes Carter Cemetery. It continues heading northwest, with a slight northward jog, until it passes Antioch Cemetery.
