Plains, Georgia
Plains is a town in Sumter County, Georgia, United States. The population was 776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Americus Micropolitan Statistical Area. Plains is best known as the birthplace and home of Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States. History Originally inhabited by the Muscogee people, by the 1840s three small settlements existed nearby: Plains of Dura, Magnolia Springs, and Lebanon. As railway access expanded into the region in response to increased cotton farming, these settlements coalesced closer to the new railway location. As businesses rapidly developed, local businessmen successfully petitioned the State Legislature to shorten Plains of Dura to Plains. Plains was subsequently incorporated in 1896. Smithville is a city in Lee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 575 at the 2010 census, down from 774 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albany, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. History A post office was established at Smithville in 1871. The community was named after the local Smith family. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Smithville as a town in 1863. Geography Smithville is located in northwestern Lee County at (31.902073, -84.255336). It is bordered to the north by the Sumter County line. U.S. Route 19 runs through the west side of the city, leading south to Leesburg, the Lee county seat, and north to Americus. Southwest Georgia is a fourteen-county region in the U.S. state of Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. State Route 45 (SR 45) is a state highway that runs south-to-north through portions of Seminole, Miller, Early, Calhoun, Terrell, Webster, and Sumter counties in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects Iron City and Plains, via Colquitt and Dawson. Route description SR 45 begins at an intersection with US 84/ SR 38 (Dunham Street) in Iron City, in Seminole County. It passes through rural areas of the county and crosses into Miller County. It enters Colquitt, passing Pleasant Hill Cemetery and curving to the northwest. State Route 49 (SR 49) is a state highway that travels southwest-to-northeast through portions of Terrell, Sumter, Macon, Peach, Houston, Bibb, Jones, and Baldwin counties, mainly in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects SR 45 north of Dawson to SR 22/ SR 24 in Milledgeville. The segment from Fort Valley to Byron is part of the Fall Line Freeway, a highway that connects Columbia to Augusta.
