Georgia State Route 288
State Route 288 (SR 288) is a northwest-southeast state highway located in the northeast part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its route is entirely within Towns County. Route description SR 288 begins at an intersection with US 76/ SR 2/ SR 17 west of Hiawassee. The route runs southeast, then northeast, then southeast again, before turning east to meet its eastern terminus, an intersection with US 76/SR 2/SR 17/ SR 75 southeast of Hiawassee. Parts of the highway hug the southwestern shore of Lake Chatuge, and the highway provides access to the Lake Chatuge Recreation Area. The route serves as a functional bypass route for US 76 around Hiawassee, although it is longer than taking US 76 through downtown. The route is known as Sunnyside Road for its entire length. Hiawassee, Georgia
Hiawassee is the county seat of Towns County, Georgia, United States. The community's population was 880 at the 2010 census. Its name is derived from the Cherokee—or perhaps Creek—word ''Ayuhwasi'', which means meadow, (A variant spelling, "Hiwassee," is used for the local river and some other Appalachian place names.) Hiawassee is also known in the novel "Restart" by Gordon Korman. History A United States fur trade factory was situated here between 1807 and 1811. Settled ''circa'' 1820, Hiawassee was designated seat of the newly formed Towns County in 1856. It was incorporated as a town in 1870 and as a city in 1916, after settlers violently removed the Cherokee communities living there prior in a night of massacre in 1776. Towns County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,493. Its county seat is Hiawassee. The county was created on March 6, 1856, and named for United States lawyer, legislator, and politician George W. Towns. State Route 2 (SR 2) is a east-west state highway in the far northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway serves southern suburbs of Chattanooga, Tennessee, as well as much of the mountainous area in the northern part of the state. It traverses the counties of Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Gilmer, Fannin, Union, Towns, and Rabun. It connects Flintstone, in the northwestern part of the state, with the South Carolina state line southeast of Clayton in the northern part and the northeastern part of the state. State Route 17 (SR 17) is a state highway that travels northwest–southeast in the east-central and northeastern parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects the Savannah metro area to the North Carolina state line, northwest of Hiawassee and runs roughly parallel to the South Carolina state line. Georgia State Route 75
State Route 75 (SR 75) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of White and Towns counties in the northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects Cleveland and the North Carolina state line, via Helen, Macedonia, and Hiawassee. Route description SR 75 begins at an intersection with US 129/ SR 11 (North Main Street) in Cleveland in White County. This intersection also marks the southern terminus of SR 75 Alternate, which runs concurrent with US 129/SR 11 to the northwest. Chatuge Lake
Lake Chatuge is a man-made reservoir in Towns County, Georgia, and Clay County, North Carolina. It lies along the Hiwassee River created by the Chatuge Dam which finished construction in 1942.
