State Route 272 (SR 272) is a north–south state highway located in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its path is entirely within Washington County. Route description SR 272 begins at an oblique intersection with SR 68 northwest of Wrightsville, in the southwestern part of Washington County. It heads north, passing Bay Branch Cemetery. Then, it curves to the northwest to intersections with McBride Lane and Deer Hunter Road, in rapid succession. Just past Deer Hunter Road, the highway passes Carter Cemetery. It continues heading northwest, with a slight northward jog, until it passes Antioch Cemetery. Farther to the northwest is the town of Oconee, where SR 272 crosses over a Norfolk Southern Railway line and Sandy Hill Creek. Just past the Oconee town limits is Cox Town Road. Milledgeville, Georgia
Milledgeville is a city in and the county seat of Baldwin County in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is northeast of Macon and bordered on the east by the Oconee River. The rapid current of the river here made this an attractive location to build a city. It was the capital of Georgia from 1804 to 1868, including during the American Civil War. Milledgeville was preceded as the capital city by Louisville and was succeeded by Atlanta, the current capital. Today U.S. Highway 441 connects Milledgeville to Madison, Athens, and Dublin. Oconee is a city in Washington County, Georgia, United States. The population was 280 at the 2000 census. History The city's name derives from the Oconee people (also known as the Hitchiti), a Muskogean-speaking tribe who inhabited central Georgia at time of contact with European-American settlers. State Route 24 (SR 24) is a state highway that travels south-to-north in an S-shaped curve through portions of Bulloch, Screven, Burke, Jefferson, Washington, Baldwin, Putnam, Morgan, and Oconee counties in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects Statesboro with the Watkinsville area, via Waynesboro, Louisville, Sandersville, Milledgeville, Eatonton, and Madison. SR 24 was originally designated from Statesboro to Millen, on a different path than it currently travels. After it was shifted onto part of its current path, it was gradually extended in both directions. It was also extended from Watkinsville to Athens and then Commerce.
