State Route 149 (SR 149) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through rural portions of Telfair and Wheeler counties in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Route description The route begins at an intersection with SR 117 southwest of Lumber City. It zigzags its way north to an intersection with SR 149 Connector, southeast of McRae. It heads northeast to an intersection with US 27/ US 341/ SR 27. SR 149 continues to the northeast until it meets its northern terminus, an intersection with US 280/ SR 30 southwest of Alamo. SR 149 is not part of the National Highway System, a system of roadways important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility. Lumber City, Georgia
Lumber City is a city located in Telfair County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 967. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Lumber City as a town in 1889. The community was named for a sawmill near the original town site. Geography Lumber City is located at 31°55'48" North, 82°41'1" West (31.930033, -82.683723). U.S. Route 23/341 is the main route through the city, and leads northwest 17 mi (27 km) to McRae-Helena, the Telfair County seat, and southeast 7 mi (11 km) to Hazlehurst. Other highways that run through the city include Georgia State Routes 19 and 117. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 square miles (5.0 km2), all land. State Route 31 (SR 31) is a state highway that travels south-to-north through portions of Lowndes, Lanier, Clinch, Atkinson, Coffee, Telfair, Wheeler, Dodge, Laurens, and Johnson counties in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects the Florida state line, south of Clyattville with Wrightsville, via Valdosta, Douglas, and Dublin. McRae, Georgia
McRae was a city in and the county seat of Telfair County, Georgia, United States. It was designated as the seat in 1871, after being established the previous year as a station on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. Upon the city's merger with adjacent Helena in 2015, the new county seat is the combined city of McRae-Helena. As of the 2010 census, McRae had a population of 5,740, up from 2,682 at the 2000 census, due largely to expansion of the city limits to incorporate the area and prison population of the McRae Correctional Institution, a privately owned and operated prison under contract to the federal government. The prison is a low-security facility holding adult males; it is owned and operated by CoreCivic. History McRae was founded in 1870 as station number eleven on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad.
