State Route 144 (SR 144) is an state highway that travels in a west-to-east direction through portions of Appling, Tattnall, Long, Liberty, Bryan counties in the east-central of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects Baxley with southeastern Bryan County. Route description SR 144 begins at an intersection with US 341/SR 27 just east of Baxley, within Appling County. It heads north on Industrial Park Dr approximately 1.5 miles to an intersection with Lanes Bridge Rd, where SR 144 turns east and resumes its old alignment, through rural areas of the county, until it meets an intersection with SR 121/ SR 169. The city is the county seat of Appling County. History Baxley was first settled as a result of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad being built through Appling County in 1870. Originally, it was a railroad depot known as Station Number 7, but soon was named Baxley (after one of the community's first settlers, Wilson Baxley of North Carolina). Baxley incorporated in 1875. Fort McAllister Historic Park
Fort McAllister State Park is a Georgia state park located near Keller and Richmond Hill in south Bryan County, Georgia and on the south bank of the Ogeechee River (some parts of the park border the Atlantic Ocean). It is roughly ten miles south of Savannah. The park is home to Fort McAllister, the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. Though the earthworks were attacked unsuccessfully seven times by Union soldiers, it did not fall until it was taken by General Sherman in 1864 during his March to the Sea. The park, located on the coast, is nestled among giant live oaks and a large salt marsh. In addition, the park contains a museum specializing in Civil War artifacts. The fort was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Georgia State Route 25
State Route 25 (SR 25) is a state highway in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It travels south-to-north near the Atlantic Ocean, serving the Brunswick and Savannah metropolitan areas on its path from the Florida state line at the St. Marys River to the South Carolina state line at the Little Back River, a channel of the Savannah River. Fort Stewart
Fort Stewart is a United States Army post in the U.S. state of Georgia. It lies primarily in Liberty and Bryan counties, but also extends into smaller portions of Evans, Long and Tattnall counties.
