State Route 142 (SR 142) is a state highway that runs northwest–southeast in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia, within portions of Newton, Jasper, Putnam counties. Route description SR 142 begins at an intersection with SR 81, north of Covington, in Newton County. It heads southeast to first meet Interstate 20 (I-20) and then U.S. Route 278 (US 278)/ SR 12 in Covington. The three routes head east concurrently and cross over the Alcovy River. SR 142 splits off to the southeast and meets SR 11 (Lamar Hays Memorial Parkway). SR 142 continues to the southeast and intersects SR 213 and SR 229 in Newborn. Covington, Georgia
Covington is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia and the seat of Newton County, and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2010 Census, its population 14,113. History Covington was founded by European immigrants to the United States. It was incorporated in 1821 as the seat of the newly organized Newton County. Covington was named for United States Army Brigadier General and United States Congressman Leonard Covington, a hero of the War of 1812. The settlement grew with the advent of the railroad in 1845. Covington incorporated as a city in 1854. In 1864, General Sherman's troops marched through during their March to the Sea. Although they looted the city, destroying numerous buildings, several antebellum homes were spared. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is the organization in charge of developing and maintaining all state and federal roadways in the U.S. state of Georgia. In addition to highways, the department also has a limited role in developing public transportation and general aviation programs. Eatonton is a city in and county seat of Putnam County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 6,307. It was named after William Eaton, an officer and diplomat involved in the First Barbary War. The name consists of his surname with the English suffix "ton," meaning "town". History The Rock Eagle Effigy Mound, a Native American archaeological site, is located north of the city. It is one of two such sites east of the Mississippi River; both are in Putnam County. The mound and related earthwork constructions were made by Woodland culture peoples, perhaps as long ago as 1,000 to 3,000 years. The site is situated within a 1500-acre park administered by the University of Georgia, which also maintains a 4-H camp nearby. The Mound has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. State Route 300 (SR 300, also called the Georgia–Florida Parkway), is a state highway in the southern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. Its southern terminus is at the Florida state line south-southeast of Thomasville, where the roadway continues as US 19/ SR 57. This is also the southern terminus of SR 3, with which US 19 and SR 300 travel concurrently through the southern part of the state. Its northern terminus is at Interstate 75 (I-75) in Cordele. This is the second state route in Georgia to carry the SR 300 designation. State Route 83 (SR 83) is an state highway that travels southwest to northeast, with a southeast–to–northwest section, within portions of Monroe, Jasper, Morgan, and Walton counties in the central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. It connects Forsyth, Monticello, Madison, and Monroe. The portion from the southwestern city limits of Monticello to the Jasper–Morgan county line is included in the Monticello Crossroads Scenic Byway. Route description SR 83 begins at an intersection with US 341/ SR 7 (Peach Blossom Trail) northeast of Culloden, in Monroe County.
