Georgia State Panthers Football
The Georgia State Panthers football team is the college football program for Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. The Panthers football team was founded in 2010 and competes at the NCAA Division I FBS level. The team is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Panthers currently play at Center Parc Stadium, about ten minutes from GSU's downtown campus. History Bill Curry era (2010–2012) In November 2006, a study commissioned by Georgia State was completed and submitted back to the school. It found Georgia State to be in a good position to begin a competitive football team, and based its remarks on the location and resources of the university. It estimated that total annual expenses by 2012 would be $3.1 million. On April 15, 2007, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves was hired by Georgia State as a consultant. 2014 Georgia State Panthers Football Team
The 2014 Georgia State Panthers football team represented Georgia State University (GSU) in the 2014 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Panthers were led by second year head coach Trent Miles and played their home games at the Georgia Dome. The 2014 season was the Panthers' second in the Sun Belt Conference and the first season they were eligible to compete for the Sun Belt title and post season play at the FBS level. They finished the season 1–11, 0–8 in Sun Belt play to finish in last place. Shawn Elliott (American Football)
Shawn Elliott (born June 26, 1973) is an American football coach and former player, currently the head football coach at Georgia State University. He served as the interim head football coach at the University of South Carolina, a position he assumed on October 13, 2015. Elliott joined the South Carolina Gamecocks football coaching staff in 2010 as the team's running game coordinator under Steve Spurrier. He was later named the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. A day after South Carolina head coach Spurrier's resignation, Elliott was elevated to the position of head coach on an interim basis. Coaching career After graduating from Appalachian State University in 1996, Elliott joined the team's coaching staff under Jerry Moore. The NCAA Division I Football Championship is an annual post-season college football game, played since 2006, used to determine a national champion of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). From 1978 to 2005, the game was known as the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship. The game serves as the final match of an annual postseason bracket tournament between top teams in FCS. Since 2013, 24 teams normally participate in the tournament, with some teams receiving automatic bids upon winning their conference championship, and other teams determined by a selection committee. The 2017 Georgia State Panthers football team represented Georgia State University (GSU) in the 2017 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Panthers were led by first-year head coach Shawn Elliott. The season marked the first in which they played in the newly acquired Georgia State Stadium, a renovated Turner Field with artificial turf and a 22,000 person capacity. The 2016 Georgia State Panthers football team represented Georgia State University (GSU) in the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Panthers were led by fourth-year head coach Trent Miles for the first 10 games of the year until he was fired on November 12, 2016 after a 2–8 record. They were led by interim head coach Tim Lappano for the remainder of the season. They played their home games at the Georgia Dome.
