Georgia State Convocation Center
The Georgia State Convocation Center is a multi-purpose 8,000-seat indoor arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The arena is owned by Georgia State University and houses the Georgia State Panthers (NCAA Division I) men's and women's basketball teams. History The $85 million arena was constructed at the intersection of Fulton Street and Capitol Avenue, in the Summerhill section of Atlanta near the Olympic Cauldron and in the parking lots of Center Parc Stadium, which is now owned by the university. The building seats 7,500 for basketball, but can be expanded to hold as much as 8,000. The new facility also includes classroom and academic support space as well as the ability to accommodate large conferences and esports tournaments. The arena supersedes the Georgia State Sports Arena, which was constructed in 1972 and has a maximum capacity of 3,854 seats. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Men's Basketball
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team represents the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in NCAA Division I basketball. The team plays its home games in McCamish Pavilion on the school's Atlanta campus and is currently coached by Damon Stoudamire. Bobby Cremins led his team to the first ACC tournament victory in school history in 1985 and in 1990 he took Georgia Tech to the school's first Final Four appearance ever. Cremins retired from Georgia Tech in 2000 with the school's best winning percentage as a head coach. The Yellow Jackets returned to the Final Four in 2004 under Paul Hewitt and lost in the national title game, losing to UConn. The Georgia State Panthers are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent Georgia State University, located in Atlanta, Georgia. Almost all GSU teams compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level as members of the Sun Belt Conference, a conference of which they were a charter member. Previously, GSU was a member of the CAA, and prior to that, the ASUN Conference (then known as the Trans America Athletic Conference, or TAAC). Two GSU sports play outside the Sun Belt, both in sports not sponsored by that league; both teams joined their current conference homes in July 2021. NCAA Division I (D-I) is the highest level of College athletics, intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States, which accepts players globally. Summerhill is a neighborhood directly south of Downtown Atlanta between the Atlanta Zoo and Center Parc Stadium. It is bordered by the neighborhoods of Grant Park, Mechanicsville, and Peoplestown. Established in 1865, Summerhill is one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods and part of the 26 neighborhoods making up the Atlanta Neighborhood Planning Unit system. Center Parc Stadium (formerly Georgia State Stadium) is an outdoor stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The stadium is the home of the Georgia State University Panthers football team as of the 2017 season, replacing the Georgia Dome which had served as their home stadium from the program's inception in 2010 until 2016. It was originally built for the 1996 Summer Olympics as Centennial Olympic Stadium.
