Georgetown Coal Gasification Plant
Georgetown Coal Gasification Plant, also known as the Georgetown Service and Gas Company, is a historic coal gasification plant located at Georgetown, Sussex County, Delaware. It was built in the late-19th century, and is a rectangular one-story, three bay by three bay brick structure measuring 40 feet by 25 feet. It has a gable roof with a smaller gable roofed ventilator. Also on the property is a small brick gable roofed brick building measuring 8 feet by 10 feet; a small, square concrete building; a large, cylindrical "surge tank;" 500-gallon bottled-gas tank; and a covered pit for impurities. The complex was privately owned and developed starting in the 1880s to provide metered gas for domestic lighting, town street lights, municipal and domestic uses. Georgetown is a town and the county seat of Sussex County, Delaware, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the town is 6,422, an increase of 38.3% over the previous decade. Georgetown is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Second county seat Lewes, sited on the Delaware Bay, was designated as the first county seat. Coal gasification is the process of producing syngas—a mixture consisting primarily of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and water vapour (H2O)—from coal and water, air and/or oxygen. Sussex County, Delaware
Sussex County is located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Delaware, on the Delmarva Peninsula. As of the 2020 census, the population was 237,378. The county seat is Georgetown. The first European settlement in the state of Delaware was founded by the Dutch in 1631 near the present-day town of Lewes on the Atlantic Coast.
