Georges Rouquier
Georges Rouquier (23 June 1909 – 19 December 1989) was a French film director, screenwriter and actor. He worked principally on documentary films, and his best-known work is ''Farrebique'' (1947) a lyrical evocation of farming life in Aveyron. Biography Georges Rouquier was born in Lunel-Viel, Hérault into a family of modest means. He trained as a typographer and then a Linotype operator in Montpellier, and in the latter role he took a job in Paris in 1926. He developed an enthusiasm for the cinema and the works of Chaplin, DeMille, Eisenstein, Dovzhenko, and especially the documentarist Robert Flaherty. He met the documentary film-maker Eugène Deslaw who was impressed by his enthusiasm and agreed to teach him the basic techniques of film. Z (1969 Film)
''Z'' is a 1969 Algerian political thriller film, directed by Costa-Gavras, with a screenplay by Gavras and Jorge Semprún, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Vassilis Vassilikos. The film presents a thinly-fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of the democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. With its dark view of Greek politics and its downbeat ending, the film captures the director's outrage about the junta that then ruled Greece. The film stars Jean-Louis Trintignant as the investigating magistrate, an analogue of Christos Sartzetakis, who would be the Greek president from 1985 to 1990. International stars Yves Montand and Irene Papas also appear but, despite their star billing have very little screen time. Patricio Guzmán Lozanes (born August 11, 1941) is a Chilean documentary film director. He is most known for his films ''The Battle of Chile'' (1975-1979) and ''Salvador Allende'' (2004). Career Guzmán also teaches documentary film classes in Europe and Latin America, and is the founder and director of the International Documentary Festival of Santiago (FIDOCS). He lives in France. Jean Vautrin (17 May 1933 – 16 June 2015), real name Jean Herman, was a French writer, filmmaker and film critic. Life and career After studying literature at Auxerre, he took first place in the Id'HEC competition. He studied French literature at the University of Bombay; he became assistant director to Roberto Rossellini. Back in France, he produced five feature films. He became famous among the general public in 1989, winning the Prix Goncourt for his novel ''Un grand pas vers le bon Dieu''. ''Jeff'' is a 1969 French-Italian crime film financed by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts. Starring Alain Delon and Mireille Darc, it tells the story of a gang of thieves who fall out after a robbery and start killing each other off. Plot In Paris, a gang rob a diamond merchant after abducting his wife and killing his chauffeur. The loot is given to Jeff, their leader, who will take it to a fence in Antwerp and then return to share out the cash proceeds. But he never returns. All of the gang believe he has cheated them, apart from Laurent who still trusts his leader. They leave one member to guard Laurent and go to Jeff's apartment, where they torture his mistress Eva. Laurent kills his guard, rescues Eva, and sets off with her to Antwerp. There they find the fence, who says Jeff has the money. Chris Marker (; 29 July 1921 – 29 July 2012) was a French writer, photographer, documentary film director, multimedia artist and Essay#Film, film essayist. His best known films are ''La Jetée'' (1962), ''A Grin Without a Cat'' (1977) and ''Sans Soleil'' (1983). Jean Painlevé (20 November 1902 – 2 July 1989) was a photographer and filmmaker who specialized in underwater fauna. He was the son of mathematician and twice prime minister of France Paul Painlevé. Upbringing A few days after Painlevé was born, his mother, Marguerite Petit de Villeneuve, died from complications arising from an infection contracted during childbirth.
