George Wilson (quarterback)
George William Wilson, Jr. (May 29, 1943 – August 6, 2011) was an American football player. He played college football at Xavier University and professionally for the American Football League's (AFL) 1966 expansion team, the Miami Dolphins. In 1965, Wilson was selected in the 20th round of the National Football League (NFL) draft by the Detroit Lions, with the overall 277th pick. However, he eventually signed with the AFL's Buffalo Bills, who drafted him as the 96th pick in the 12th round of the Red Shirt draft. In 1966, Wilson was traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 13th round 1967 draft pick. At the time, the Dolphins' head coach was his father, George Wilson, Sr. During his only season in Miami, George Wilson, Jr. shared starting quarterback duties with Rick Norton, John Stofa, and Dick Wood. Abner Haynes
Abner Haynes (born September 19, 1937) is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the American Football League (AFL). Early years and integration of major college football in Texas Born in Denton, Texas, Haynes graduated from Lincoln High School in Dallas in 1956. He played college football at North Texas State College in Denton (now the University of North Texas) where he and his then teammate Leon King integrated college football in the state of Texas in 1957. Carlton Chester "Cookie" Gilchrist (May 25, 1935 – January 10, 2011) was an American football player who played professionally in the American Football League (AFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL). Career A star player at Har-Brack High School in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, in 1953 he led the team to the W.P.I.A.L. co-championship with Donora. As a junior, he was talked into signing a professional football contract with the NFL's Cleveland Browns by Paul Brown. The signing was against NFL rules and likely illegal, and when Brown reneged on his promise that Gilchrist would make the team, Gilchrist left training camp at Hiram College, in Hiram, Ohio, and went to Canada to play. Earl Faison
Earl Faison (January 31, 1939 – June 12, 2016) was an American professional football player who was a defensive end in the American Football League (AFL) between 1960 and 1966. He spent most of his career with the San Diego Chargers. Career Drafted by both the Detroit Lions of the National Football League and the Los Angeles Chargers of the AFL, Faison signed with the Chargers as a first-round pick immediately after the conclusion of the East–West Shrine Game on December 31, 1960. The 6-foot-5, 260 pound Faison had been an All-American at Indiana University, playing on both offense and defense. 1967 Miami Dolphins Season
The 1967 Miami Dolphins season was the team's second in the American Football League (AFL). The Dolphins improved by 1 game over their 3–11 inaugural season from 1966, finishing 4–10 and in 4th place in the AFL Eastern Division. The team began its season with two straight bye weeks. In the first game, they beat Denver, 35–21, to win their first ever season opener. However, the Dolphins then lost 8 straight games before beating the Buffalo Bills, 17–14, at home. Passer rating (also known as passing efficiency in college football) is a measure of the performance of passers, primarily quarterbacks, in gridiron football. There are two formulas currently in use: one used by both the National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL), and the other used in NCAA football. Passer rating is calculated using a player's passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions. Passer rating in the NFL is on a scale from 0 to 158.3. Passing efficiency in college football is on a scale from −731.6 to 1261.6. Since 1973, passer rating has been the official formula used by the NFL to determine its passing leader. Dick Wood
Malcolm Richard Wood (February 29, 1936 – April 4, 2015) was an American football quarterback and coach who played college football at Auburn and professionally in the American Football League (AFL). After his player career ended, Wood served as an assistant coach in college football and the NFL over four decades. As a player Playing for Lanett High School, Wood was named to the All-State team in Alabama in 1954. He went on to help lead Auburn to an undefeated season in 1958. He was drafted by the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League (NFL) in 1959. He never played for the Colts, and signed with the Denver Broncos of the American Football League (AFL) as a free agent in 1962. Later in that season, Wood saw his first significant playing time as a member of the San Diego Chargers, playing in 6 games and starting 2 (he filled in for teammates Jack Kemp and John Hadl). John Stofa
John Carl Stofa (June 29, 1942 – April 23, 2022) was an American professional football player who was a quarterback in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL). Early life John Stofa was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Ann Stofa. He graduated from Bishop McCort High School. He attended the University at Buffalo where, as a member of the Class of 1964, he was the Bulls starting quarterback in 1962 and 1963. As a starter those seasons, the Bulls were 6–3 and 5–3–1, respectively. He set passing and total yardage records as the Bulls' quarterback. He also played baseball at Buffalo from 1962 to 1964. Rick Norton
Richard Eugene Norton (November 16, 1943 – July 25, 2013) from Louisville, Kentucky was an American collegiate and professional football quarterback who played college football at the University of Kentucky and professionally with the American Football League's Miami Dolphins (1966–1969), and one game for the National Football League's Green Bay Packers (1970). He died of natural causes on July 25, 2013. Norton holds the distinction of throwing the last professional touchdown pass at Wrigley Field.
