George Philip Willis, Baron Willis of Knaresborough (born 30 November 1941, Burnley) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He is a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords, and was Member of Parliament (MP) for Harrogate and Knaresborough from 1997 until retiring at the 2010 general election. Up to that date he was the chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee. Early life He attended Burnley Grammar School and the City of Leeds and Carnegie College, where he gained a Cert Ed in 1963. George Willis (c. 1840 December 7, 1884) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Biography Willis enlisted in the Navy from his birth state of Massachusetts and served as a coxswain aboard the during the search for the missing exploration ship ''Polaris''. When an Arctic gale struck ''Tigress'' off the coast of Greenland on the night of September 22, 1873, Willis volunteered to single-handedly furl (lower, roll up and secure) the loose fore topgallant sail, an act which prevented damage to the ship. George Willis (footballer)
George Willis (9 November 1926 – 25 May 2011) was an English footballer who played as an inside forward for Brighton & Hove Albion, Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City, and Taunton Town. He won the Third Division South title with Plymouth in 1951–52. Career Willis joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1945, having worked as a miner on leaving school. He guested for Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra in 1946. In February 1948, he moved on to Brighton & Hove Albion, who struggled at the foot of the Third Division South table in the 1947–48 campaign, before rising to sixth place in 1948–49. He scored 13 goals in 28 league games for Don Welsh's "Seagulls", before leaving the Goldstone Ground for Plymouth Argyle in May 1949. Jimmy Rae's "Pilgrims" suffered relegation out of the Second Division in 1949–50. General Sir George Harry Smith Willis (11 November 1823 – 29 November 1900) was a British Army General who achieved high office in the 1880s. He was born at Sopley Park in Sopley, Hampshire. Military career Willis was commissioned into the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment in 1841. He served in the Crimean War and at the Battle of Inkerman he led the charge of a Grenadier company. He returned to England in 1857 to become Commanding Officer of 2nd Bn 6th (Warwickshire) Regiment. He was appointed Assistant Quartermaster-General at the War Office in 1873 and then General Officer Commanding Northern District in April 1878. In 1882 he was dispatched to Egypt and commanded troops at Al-Magfar and Tell al-Mahuta during the Anglo-Egyptian War. He was involved in the capture of Mahsama and the Second battle of Kassassin. George Francis Willis (1880, Waynesville, North Carolina - July 20, 1932) was an American millionaire who made his fortunes with patent medicines. Biography Willis attended Bingham Military School in Asheville, North Carolina, and later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he became involved with a patent medicine firm. Willis began to sell and promote the medicines. In 1913 he founded International Proprietaries, Inc., and made a fortune selling a tonic called Tanlac. Although chemists at the time branded it quackery, as it was simply fortified wine with herbs and a laxative, the tonic sold very well nevertheless. Willis sold his firm in 1922 but then made another fortune with Zonite, an antiseptic preparation based on Dakin's solution, widely used in World War I. Clarence George Willis (November 11, 1907 – February 14, 1984) was an educator, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Melfort-Tisdale from 1952 to 1970 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and then New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Dauphin, Manitoba, the son of John Henry Willis and Elizabeth Rebecca Herd, and came to Saskatchewan while he was attending high school. Willis continued his education at Nutana College in Saskatoon and then at the University of Saskatchewan. He left the University after one year and then earned a teaching certificate from the Saskatoon Normal School. Willis taught school from 1931 to 1944.
