George Whiting Badman
George Whiting Badman (21 December 1886 – 3 September 1953) was a South Australian business man and horse breeder and owner. Business * Angaston Quarries * X. L. ''The Register'', originally the ''South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register'', and later ''South Australian Register,'' was South Australia's first newspaper. It was first published in London in June 1836, moved to Adelaide in 1837, and folded into '' The Advertiser'' almost a century later in February 1931. The Goodwood is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three years old and older, run at set weights with penalties, over a distance of 1200 metres at Morphettville Racecourse, Adelaide, South Australia in the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History In 2007 the race conditions were set weights and penalties after previously being a handicap race throughout its 121-year history and was renamed The Goodwood from Goodwood Handicap. The event is the richest sprint race in autumn in Adelaide with $502,250 in prize money. The race was a principal race until 1980 when it was granted Group 1 status. In the years between 1881–1885 the distance was one mile. The race has always attracted high calibre sprinters. First run in 1874, the brainchild of VRC committeeman Captain Frederick Standish who thought a "short and merry" race over six furlongs would add interest to the Club's autumn program. Lower Light, South Australia
Lower Light is a township adjacent to Port Wakefield Road in South Australia's lower Mid North. The township of Port Prime was surveyed on the coast of Gulf St Vincent in 1880, but little remains of that town now, and it is included as part of the bounded locality of Lower Light. Lower Light is named for the lower Light River estuary into Gulf St Vincent directly south of the settlement. Lower Light has also been the location of parachuting/skydiving operations since 1962, which operate from the George Quigley Airfield, located a short distance north of the township.
