George Wheeler (explorer)
George Montague Wheeler (October 9, 1842 – May 3, 1905) was an American pioneering explorer and cartographer, leader of the Wheeler Survey, one of the major surveys of the western United States in the late nineteenth century. Wheeler was born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, the son of John Wheeler and Miriam P. Daniels. He graduated from West Point in 1866, ranked sixth in his class, and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the US Army United States Army Corps of Engineers, Corps of Engineers. He first served in California from 1866 to 1871. In 1869 General Edward O. C. George Wheeler (1858 – 9 December 1947) was an English entomologist who specialised in Lepidoptera. The Reverend George Wheeler M.A. wrote ''Butterflies of Switzerland'' (1935), and completed Volume 11 of ''British Lepidoptera'' by James William Tutt, after the Tutt's death in 1911. He was an avid collector, especially of "varieties" of Lepidoptera. George Wheeler was a Fellow of the Entomological Society of London, sometime elected Secretary and Vice-President. George Godfrey Massy Wheeler, VC (31 January 1873 – 13 April 1915) was a British Army officer, and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Background and family Wheeler was a grandson of Sir Hugh Massy Wheeler. He was educated at Bedford Modern School. In 1900 he married Nellie Purcell, a daughter of the surgeon Ferdinand Purcell. Military career Wheeler was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment on 20 May 1893, and was promoted to lieutenant on 1 April 1895. George Harrison "Heavy" Wheeler (November 10, 1881 – June 18, 1918) was a Major League Baseball pinch hitter who played in three games for the Cincinnati Reds in 1910. He was an outfielder during his minor league career. Wheeler made his major league debut on July 27, 1910 at the age of 28 and appeared in his final big league game on August 3 of that year. George Huber Wheeler (September 26, 1881 – January 20, 1957) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal for his fire-fighting efforts during a blaze in Coquimbo, Chile. Wheeler went on to have a 32-year Navy career, being temporarily promoted to lieutenant during World War I and achieving the permanent rank of chief warrant officer before his retirement. Biography Wheeler was born on September 26, 1881, in Charleston, South Carolina, and enlisted in the Navy from that state in August 1905. By January 20, 1909, he was serving as a shipfitter first class on a ship in the 2nd Division of the United States Pacific Fleet.
