George Welshman Owens
George Welshman Owens (August 29, 1786 – March 2, 1856) was a United States Representative and lawyer from Georgia. Early life Born in Savannah, Georgia, in 1786, Owens attended school in Harrow, England, and graduated from the University of Cambridge. After studying law in the office of Mr. Chitty in London, Owens returned to Savannah, gained admittance to the state bar and practiced law. Political career Owens was elected as a Jacksonian Representative from Georgia to the 24th United States Congress and won reelection as a Democrat to the 25th Congress, serving from March 4, 1835, until March 3, 1839. After his congressional service, Owens returned to practicing law and died in Savannah on March 2, 1856. Hopkins Holsey (August 25, 1779 – March 31, 1859) was a United States Representative, newspaper publisher and lawyer from Georgia. Biography Early life Hopkins Holsey was the second of five children born to Susannah Ingram and James Holsey in Campbell County, Virginia near Lynchburg on August 25, 1779. In 1806 the Holseys moved to Hancock County, Georgia where they established a large plantation. When Hopkins was in his late teens, his father died, leaving the operation of the plantation to Susannah, Hopkins, and his older brother, Gideon. Nonetheless, Hopkins was able to attend the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where he was a member of the Clariosophic Society. After graduating in 1819, he went north to enter Litchfield Law School in Connecticut. Roger Lawson Gamble
Roger Lawson Gamble (1787 – December 20, 1847) was a United States representative and lawyer from Georgia. Born near Louisville, in 1787, Gamble studied law, was admitted to the state bar in 1815 and began practicing law in Louisville. He was an officer in the War of 1812. Gamble served in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1814 and 1815. Gamble was elected in 1832 as a Jacksonian to the 23rd United States Congress and served one term from March 4, 1833, until March 3, 1835, as he unsuccessfully ran for reelection in 1834. He was elected to the U.S. House again as a Whig to represent Georgia in the 27th U.S. Congress and served one term from March 4, 1841, until March 3, 1843, as his lost his reelection bid for a second term in that seat in 1842. From 1845 to 1847, Gamble served as a judge of the superior court of Georgia. William Thorne Williams
William T. Williams (1785–1868) was an American politician who served as mayor of Savannah, Georgia (1828–1830, 1833–1834, 1841–1842, and 1843–1844). Biography Williams was born in 1785 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He moved to Savannah where he worked as a printer, bookbinder, and operated a bookstore. In 1813, he became a member of the Chatham Artillery. In 1825, he was elected alderman and then was elected mayor in 1828 serving two terms until 1830. After mayor George Owen resigned on July 11, 1833, Williams completed the remainder of his term and then was again elected to a one-year term as mayor on September 9, 1833. He served as mayor for an additional two terms (1841–1842, and 1843–1844). He died in 1868.
