George Vautin
George James Phillips Vautin (23 April 1869 – 9 January 1949) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and first-class cricket for both Tasmania and Victoria. Family Vautin was born in Orielton, Tasmania and died in the Mercy Hospital in East Melbourne. Football Vautin was from Tasmania and played at the City Football Club in Hobart. A rover, he represented his league in 1889 in an away series in Victoria, impressing the Essendon recruiters who signed him up for the 1892 VFA season and he was a key part of their premiership teams over the next three seasons. The VFL began in 1897 and Vautin was a member of Essendon's inaugural VFL premiership side. Cricket Vautin was also a cricketer, playing a first-class match for Tasmania in 1889/90 and another for Victoria in 1894/95. Orielton, Tasmania
Orielton is a rural locality in the local government area of Sorell in the Central and Hobart regions of Tasmania, Australia. It is located about north-west of the town of Sorell. The Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club is an Australian cricket club based at Walter Galt Reserve, situated in Parkdale, Victoria. They play in Victorian Premier Cricket, the highest competition in the state. History The club was originally known as East Melbourne. It shared dominance of Melbourne cricket with its neighbour, the Melbourne Cricket Club. East Melbourne won the Victorian cricket competition 20 times and was runner-up another 20 times. When the Victorian Railways took over the East Melbourne Oval for expansion to its railyards the club amalgamated with Hawthorn (Sub-District) in 1921 and moved to Glenferrie Oval, playing as Hawthorn-East Melbourne. The Footballers' Alphabet
On Saturday 23 July 1898, the Melbourne weekly newspaper '' The Leader'' published ''The Footballers' Alphabet''. The poem, which had been written by its influential (Australian Rules) football correspondent, "Follower", delivered a brief comment on a number of the most prominent Australian Rules footballers playing in Melbourne in 1898 -- the second year of the VFL competition -- presented in the alphabetical order of their family names. Given the poem’s subject and its novelty, it was very popular, and it was republished in a number of different newspapers, including ''The Age'', and ''The Ovens and Murray Advertiser''. A '' pastiche'' of the poem, centred on the players of the Sunbury Football Club in the Yorke Peninsula, was published in 1920, and another, centred on the players in the Adelaide (SAFL) competition, was published in 1925.
